Chapter 10 - THE SECRET OF LORENZO’S BIRTH

For six hours, Vivian believed the document.

For six terrible hours, she believed Lorenzo might be her half brother.

She did not touch him.

Could barely look at him.

Then Antonio arrived with the original registry.

The certificate was forged.

Marcello created it years earlier.

“Why?” Lorenzo asked.

Antonio laid out the evidence.

“To destroy your claim to the Falcone succession.”

Relief nearly made Vivian collapse.

But the truth was still complicated.

Lorenzo’s biological father was not Vittorio.

His mother, Sofia Falcone, had loved another man before marrying.

A prosecutor named Daniel Caruso.

Lorenzo was Daniel’s son.

Vittorio knew.

Raised him anyway.

Used the secret whenever Lorenzo questioned him.

“He told me once I should be grateful he gave me his name,” Lorenzo whispered.

Vivian looked at him differently.

Not forgiving.

Understanding.

There was a difference.

“Did your mother know?”

“She died when I was nine.”

Antonio nodded.

“She knew. Nathan knew too.”

“Why?”

“Nathan represented Daniel.”

Another connection.

Another reason Nathan tried to save Lorenzo from Vittorio.

Lorenzo sat alone for several minutes.

“He wasn’t protecting me because I was going to marry Vivian.”

“No.”

“He was protecting me years before.”

“Yes.”

That realization broke something open inside Lorenzo.

The man he had indirectly helped expose to danger had once protected him without asking for anything.

Then federal prosecutors arrived.

They offered Lorenzo a cooperation agreement.

Testify.

Turn over the Falcone organization.

Identify every criminal operation.

Accept sentencing exposure.

He might lose years.

Maybe freedom.

Maybe everything.

Vivian expected hesitation.

There was none.

“I’ll do it.”

His attorney stared.

“Lorenzo, we should discuss—”

“No.”

He looked at Vivian.

“I spent my whole life surviving consequences by making other people pay them.”

His voice steadied.

“I’m done.”

He signed.

Vivian’s chest tightened.

Not because it repaired what he had done.

Because it proved he understood repair required cost.

Over the next four months, the Falcone empire collapsed.

Vittorio was indicted for murder conspiracy, racketeering, financial crimes, and Vivian’s pregnancy loss.

Marcello faced charges for Nathan’s murder and decades of organized crime.

Captains flipped.

Judges resigned.

Businesses closed.

Lorenzo surrendered control of every illicit operation.

His legitimate holdings went into court-supervised administration.

Vivian filed for divorce.

He did not fight.

Not once.

The day papers arrived, he signed them within an hour.

Then he sent one handwritten note.

I will not use love as another reason to keep you somewhere you chose to leave.

Vivian cried for the first time since the monastery.

Not because she wanted to return.

Because the man she needed three years earlier had finally appeared after she no longer belonged to him.

Then the federal sentencing hearing came.

Lorenzo stood before the judge.

He admitted everything.

No excuses.

No childhood.

No father.

No syndicate pressure.

“I chose what I became.”

Vivian watched from the back row.

The judge sentenced him to thirty months in federal custody due to extensive cooperation.

Lorenzo did not look at Vivian as marshals led him away.

That hurt.

Then Antonio handed her an envelope.

“He asked me to give you this only after sentencing.”

Inside was the deed to the Bellini properties.

Fully restored to Vivian.

No Falcone claims.

No liens.

No conditions.

And a second document.

Lorenzo had placed his entire legitimate personal fortune into a restitution fund for victims of Falcone operations.

He kept only one property.

A small cabin near Lake George.

The first place he and Vivian had ever spent a weekend alone.

Then Antonio said:

“There’s something else.”

Vivian looked up.

“Lorenzo discovered who changed your prenatal medication.”

“I know. Vittorio.”

Antonio shook his head.

“No.”

“Vittorio authorized it.”

“Yes.”

“But somebody else physically replaced it.”

“Who?”

Antonio’s face hardened.

“Matteo.”

May you like

Lorenzo’s most trusted cousin.

The man who had just inherited control of what remained of the legal Falcone companies.
