Chapter 12 - THE LEDGER MARCUS HID FROM EVERYONE

Caleb Monroe did not run.
When Naomi called, he answered.
“I wondered when you’d find that note.”
She nearly shouted.
“You had Marcus’s ledger?”
“No.”
“Then why is your name on Elena’s list?”
“Because Marcus told me where he hid it.”
Damon arranged the meeting.
Caleb arrived carrying nothing.
That irritated Damon immediately.
“Where is it?”
Caleb looked at Naomi.
“Marcus made me promise not to retrieve it unless two conditions were met.”
“What conditions?”
“Victor lost access to Ashford financial systems.”
Damon nodded.
“And?”
Caleb looked toward Zuri, who was coloring at the far end of the library with Margaret.
“Zuri was safe.”
Naomi went pale.
Marcus had planned for his daughter before she was born.
Caleb explained.
The original ledger was not a book.
It was a complete encrypted copy of every transaction Marcus discovered.
Names.
Accounts.
Approvals.
External beneficiaries.
Enough to prove not only what Victor stole but where the money went.
Marcus hid it somewhere Victor would never search.
Naomi’s old apartment.
She stared.
“I moved out after he died.”
“I know.”
“The building was demolished.”
“Not everything.”
Marcus had hidden a waterproof drive inside a metal support beneath the community garden bench he built for the apartment complex.
When the property was redeveloped, Caleb bought the bench at auction.
He had kept it in storage.
Damon almost admired the absurd simplicity.
Victor had searched servers, offices, houses.
He had never searched a park bench.
The drive contained everything.
The foundation theft was larger than expected.
Twenty-six million dollars.
Much of it had been routed into speculative investments, private property, and debt payments connected to Victor.
More importantly, Marcus documented every step of Charles’s cover-up.
Charles had discovered Victor stealing two years before Elena.
Instead of exposing him, he secretly moved legitimate company money into the foundation to replace what was missing.
That meant shareholders had also been deceived.
The scandal Damon had feared was now unavoidable.
He called the board.
“We disclose all of it.”
Several directors objected.
Damon did not care.
Full forensic review.
Full restitution.
Independent oversight.
No family exemptions.
Ashford Holdings would survive honestly or it did not deserve to survive.
Then Theo discovered something in Marcus’s ledger none of them expected.
One account held $4.8 million Victor never touched.
The account was legally owned by Elena.
“What was it for?” Damon asked.
Naomi read the memo line.
PROJECT STARLING.
Margaret gasped.
“I know that name.”
Everyone turned.
“Elena used it for a project she never announced.”
“What project?”
Margaret began smiling through tears.
“She wanted to open transitional housing for women with young children.”
Naomi went still.
Elena had once stayed with Naomi during the worst months after Marcus died.
She knew exactly what single mothers faced.
The fund had continued earning interest for three years.
It was now worth more than five million dollars.
And Elena’s documents named two future trustees.
