Chapter 10 - THE MESSAGE DAMON NEVER RECEIVED

Damon searched every account.
Email.
Voicemail.
Private server.
Old phones.
Nothing.
Elena had never sent him evidence.
At least, nothing he had received.
Theo widened the search.
Two hours later, he found a deleted server rule created the night Elena died.
Any email from Elena Ashford containing large attachments had been automatically rerouted.
“To where?” Damon asked.
Theo looked grim.
“Your father’s executive account.”
Charles again.
Elena had tried.
Damon simply never knew.
The recovered message had no attachments left, but the subject remained.
FOR DAMON - OPEN IF I’M WRONG ABOUT VICTOR.
Damon stared at it.
Naomi stood quietly beside him.
“If Charles received it, he knew before the hospital.”
“Yes.”
“And he still protected Victor.”
“Yes.”
There was no defense left.
No interpretation generous enough to rescue the father Damon remembered.
But the missing attachments created another question.
Where had Charles put them?
Theo traced Charles’s devices.
One laptop had never been recovered after his death.
His personal estate records showed it was stored in a private office at the old Ashford family home.
The house had been closed for fourteen months.
Damon, Naomi, Theo, and Margaret drove there that night.
The office smelled of leather and dust.
Charles’s desk remained untouched.
The laptop was gone.
But behind a framed photograph, Damon found a handwritten list of passwords.
One opened Charles’s private cloud archive.
There it was.
ELENA_TRANSFER.
A copy of her evidence.
Bank records.
Photos of medication tablets.
Security logs.
Audio.
And one video.
Elena was in the upstairs hallway the night she died.
Victor stood in front of her.
The recording came from Elena’s phone, apparently hidden in her hand.
“You changed the pills,” Elena said.
Victor’s voice answered.
“I changed nothing that could kill you.”
“You made me sick.”
“I needed you to stop.”
“You stole from sick children.”
Silence.
“You think Damon will forgive that?”
Victor laughed softly.
“Damon forgives family.”
“No,” Elena said. “He forgives people he trusts.”
Footsteps.
Movement.
Then Victor said something Damon would remember forever.
“If you send him those files, you destroy his father too.”
The recording ended.
Naomi covered her mouth.
Margaret began crying.
Damon stood completely still.
Elena had not only uncovered Victor.
She had discovered Charles’s cover-up.
Then Theo found another file.
Not Elena’s.
Charles had recorded it months after her death.
He sat alone in the same office.
“If Damon ever discovers this archive, he will hate me.”
Charles looked older than Damon remembered.
“I protected Victor because I thought scandal would destroy everything our family built.”
He paused.
“I was wrong.”
Damon felt nothing.
Not yet.
Charles continued.
“But there is something Damon does not know.”
The dead man looked directly into the camera.
“Elena survived for nine minutes after the ambulance arrived.”
Damon’s chest tightened.
“And before she lost consciousness, she gave the paramedic a message for him.”
Damon stopped the video.
“What message?”
Theo searched.
There was no file.
But Charles had written the paramedic’s name.
