Chapter 4 - THE DOCTOR WHO BETRAYED ME

Adrian Cole had once saved my career.
When I was a young surgeon, a senior physician had blamed me for a complication caused by faulty equipment. Adrian had testified about what really happened, even though doing so damaged his relationship with the department chair.
I'd never forgotten his courage.
Three years ago, he'd left Harrington to join a private surgical practice.
We still exchanged holiday cards and occasionally met at medical conferences.
Now his name appeared beneath a document that falsely claimed he'd witnessed me authorize an $8.2 million financial arrangement.
I called him.
He answered on the fourth ring.
"Evelyn. I heard something happened at Harrington."
"Did you notarize a document involving Serena Vale and the Heart Foundation?"
Silence.
Then he exhaled.
"I was told it was a routine verification."
"Did you see me sign it?"
"No."
The answer came so quietly that I almost missed it.
"Then why is your name on the document?"
"Grant brought the paperwork to my office. He said you were traveling and had already approved everything electronically. He needed the notarization completed quickly."
My grip tightened around the phone.
"And you did it?"
"I should have refused. I know that now."
"Did you receive money?"
Another pause.
"My practice was struggling. Grant said it was a favor, nothing more."
I closed my eyes.
There it was again.
A favor.
That was how people dressed up their worst decisions when they wanted to avoid looking at themselves.
Adrian agreed to provide the original correspondence to investigators. He also admitted that Grant had asked him several questions about my professional insurance and the legal protections attached to my position as chief.
He'd assumed Grant was helping me prepare for a promotion.
I ended the call and sat motionless for several minutes.
The betrayal was no longer confined to my marriage.
It had reached into my professional relationships, my hospital, and my reputation.
Then Miriam sent me a photograph.
It showed a document dated three weeks earlier, signed by Grant and Serena.
The heading read:
CONTINGENCY PLAN — MERCER ACCOUNTABILITY STRATEGY.

Beneath it was a sentence that made my blood run cold.
If Evelyn discovers the transfers, establish that she authorized the transactions as part of her executive duties.
