Chapter 1 - THE WIFE WHO DIDN'T EXIST

The moment Grant saw me standing beside the admissions desk, he made the biggest mistake of his life.

He called me by my first name.

Not his wife. Not the woman he'd shared a home with for twenty-two years. Just Evelyn, as though I were another hospital employee who had interrupted his morning.

Serena's fingers tightened around his arm.

"Grant, who is she?"

I looked directly at my husband.

For years, I'd stood beside him at charity galas, hospital fundraisers, and dinners where wealthy donors praised our marriage as an example of partnership. Now he couldn't even introduce me honestly.

"I'm Dr. Evelyn Mercer," I said. "Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery."

Serena blinked.

Grant opened his mouth, but I raised a hand.

"And according to the documents submitted to this hospital, I'm also the financial guarantor for a woman I've never authorized anyone to add to my records."

Hannah, the admissions nurse, went completely still.

Serena's smile disappeared.

Grant stepped toward me.

"Evelyn, we need to talk privately."

"No. We need to talk accurately."

I turned to Hannah and asked her to preserve every document associated with Serena's registration. Then I requested that hospital compliance secure the original submission and record who had authorized it.

Grant's face hardened.

"You don't want to do this here."

I almost smiled.

He had brought his mistress into my hospital, called her his wife, and expected me to protect his reputation.

He had forgotten something important.

This was the place where I investigated problems before they killed people.

And somebody had placed my name on a document that could destroy far more than a marriage.

As security escorted Serena to a private waiting area, Daniel Price appeared beside me with another folder.

"Dr. Mercer," he whispered, "there's something worse."

He opened it.

The fraudulent guarantee wasn't merely connected to Serena's medical coverage.

It was linked to a hospital account containing $8.2 million.

And every transfer authorization carried my name.
