Chapter 11 - VANESSA’S REAL REASON

Vanessa had lied about more than the ring.

Much more.

According to Rebecca’s ledger, millions continued moving through Harbor Health after Charles Carter became too sick to manage anything himself.

The authorization code belonged to Vanessa.

Malcolm sat at Rebecca’s dining table, turning pages rapidly.

“She didn’t inherit the fraud,” he said.

“She continued it.”

Rebecca nodded.

“And expanded it.”

My phone rang.

Marcus.

I answered.

“Rachel, don’t come back to the hotel.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“Vanessa’s gone.”

“What do you mean, gone?”

“She left through the parking garage twenty minutes ago.”

“Did management stop her?”

“They tried.”

“Police?”

“On the way.”

Then his voice changed.

“There’s more.”

“What?”

“I searched the hotel room again.”

I looked toward Rebecca.

“And?”

“The dog carrier.”

“What about it?”

“There was a false bottom.”

Inside, Marcus had found several passports.

Cash.

And two phones.

One phone contained photographs of me.

My daughters.

Our apartment.

Daniel’s grave.

Rebecca’s farmhouse.

I looked toward the window.

“She knows where we are.”

Rebecca stood immediately.

Malcolm went pale.

“Rachel, get away from the windows.”

Then headlights appeared outside.

A black SUV turned into the driveway.

My heart stopped.

“Too late.”

Malcolm moved toward the door.

Rebecca grabbed his arm.

“No.”

The SUV stopped.

A woman stepped out.

Vanessa.

Alone.

She wasn’t carrying a weapon.

She wasn’t running.

She simply walked toward the house with both hands visible.

I stepped onto the porch before Malcolm could stop me.

“Why did you frame me?”

Vanessa stopped ten feet away.

Her makeup was gone.

Her eyes were red.

“Because I needed you fired.”

“Why?”

“So the hotel would search your things.”

“We know that.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You don’t.”

Her voice broke.

“I wasn’t looking for Daniel’s USB.”

Malcolm frowned.

“Then what?”

She looked directly at Rebecca.

“The key.”

Rebecca’s face changed.

I turned.

“What key?”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“She never told you?”

“Told me what?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Daniel didn’t reroute all the money.”

I remembered the trust.

“How much is missing?”

“Eight-point-four million.”

Malcolm stared.

“That’s impossible.”

“It isn’t.”

Vanessa continued.

“My father moved the money into bearer bonds before he died. Daniel found them.”

“Where?”

“A private vault.”

Rebecca whispered:

“Charles’s emergency reserve.”

Vanessa nodded.

“My father spent his final weeks trying to recover the key.”

I looked at Rebecca.

“You have it.”

“No.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“She doesn’t.”

“Then who?”

Vanessa pointed at me.

“You do.”

I almost laughed.

“I have no key.”

“You’ve had it for eighteen months.”

My pulse changed.

“What are you talking about?”

Vanessa looked at my necklace.

I instinctively touched it.

My wedding necklace.

Daniel’s final anniversary gift.

A simple silver pendant I had worn every day since he died.

May you like

Vanessa whispered:

“He put the vault key inside that pendant.”
