Chapter 1 - THE THING SHE WANTED ME TO FIND

Marcus froze the security footage on a single frame.
Vanessa Carter stood just outside the doorway of Suite 1814, one hand holding her tiny white dog and the other disappearing briefly behind the decorative flower arrangement beside the entry table.
Then she stepped into the hallway beside her husband.
“What did she put there?” I asked.
Marcus didn’t answer.
Instead, he switched cameras.
The next angle showed me entering the suite eleven minutes later with my cart.
I watched myself strip the bed.
Replace the towels.
Empty the trash.
Vacuum the carpet.
Then I moved toward the entry table.
My recorded self stopped.
Bent down.
And picked up something.
My stomach tightened.
“I remember that.”
Marcus looked at me.
“What was it?”
“A hotel envelope.”
The cream-colored envelopes were normally used for guest messages.
“I thought another employee had left it there by mistake.”
“What did you do with it?”
“I put it on the desk.”
Marcus fast-forwarded.
There I was.
Crossing the room.
Setting the envelope beside the hotel notepad.
Then leaving.
“That’s it,” I whispered.
“No.”
Marcus rewound again.
“Watch what happens after you leave.”
I stared at the screen.
Nine minutes passed.
Then the door opened.
Vanessa returned alone.
She looked both directions in the hallway before slipping inside.
“That doesn’t make sense,” I said. “The access log showed no one entered.”
“She used the physical backup key attached to her reservation packet. Old lock system. It doesn’t register electronically.”
Vanessa entered the room.
Walked straight to the desk.
Opened the envelope.
Removed something.
Then she slid her hand beneath the bed.
Twenty minutes later, she and her husband returned together.
That was when she began screaming about the missing ring.
My heart started pounding.
“She put the ring under the bed after I left.”
Marcus nodded.
“But housekeeping searched the room.”
“I know.”
“Then why didn’t they find it?”
“Because she removed it before security arrived.”
I stared at him.
“What was inside the envelope?”
Marcus leaned back.
“That’s the part you need to see.”
He opened a still image taken from the highest-resolution camera.
Vanessa had briefly held the envelope contents near the doorway.
Marcus zoomed in.
The image was grainy.
But I could make out a photograph.
A man standing beside a black SUV.
My breath stopped.
“No.”
Marcus looked at me.
“You recognize him?”
I stepped closer until my knees touched the desk.
The photograph was old.
At least four years.
The man wore a blue work jacket and had his hands shoved into his pockets.
I knew that posture.
That face.
That half-smile.
It was my husband.
Daniel.
The man I had buried eighteen months earlier.
I could barely speak.
“Why does she have a picture of my husband?”
Marcus’s expression tightened.
“That isn’t the only thing.”
He reached into a drawer and removed a clear evidence bag.
Inside was a small black USB drive.
“I found this behind the entry table after management sealed the room.”
I stared at it.
“Was it inside the envelope?”
“I think so.”
My hands began shaking.
“Have you opened it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because one file on it is labeled with your name.”
I looked at him.
“What file?”
Marcus turned the bag over.
Someone had scratched two words into the plastic casing of the drive.
RACHEL BENNETT.
