Chapter 5 - THE HIDDEN ROOM

A man appeared at the top of the stairs.

He was wearing a dark coat.

I didn't recognize him.

But Evelyn did.

“Daniel.”

He smiled.

“It's been a long time.”

Marcus stepped backward.

“Who is that?”

Evelyn didn't answer.

Daniel walked downstairs.

“You should have left the country when you had the chance.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“I was waiting for you.”

Daniel laughed.

“You always were stubborn.”

I looked at her.

“Who is he?”

“My former partner.”

Daniel smiled.

“Former investigator.”

Evelyn corrected herself.

“Federal investigator.”

Daniel's eyes moved toward me.

“Naomi.”

I stepped back.

“How do you know my name?”

“I know everything about your family.”

He looked at Marcus.

“And your husband made sure I knew even more.”

Marcus's face went pale.

“What did you tell him?”

“Enough.”

Daniel pulled a key from his pocket.

He walked toward the fireplace.

“There is something under this house.”

I stared.

He touched a section of the wall.

A hidden panel opened.

Behind it was a narrow staircase.

Evelyn whispered:

“Your father built this.”

I followed them downstairs.

At the bottom was a steel room.

Inside were boxes.

Photographs.

Hard drives.

Bank records.

And dozens of handwritten notes.

My father had spent years collecting evidence.

Against Blackwood.

Against corrupt executives.

Against people who had manipulated property deals across Charlotte.

Then I saw something that stopped me cold.

A photograph of Marcus.

Taken fifteen years ago.

He was standing beside a much younger Camille.

I turned toward my husband.

“You knew her before me.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I didn't know how to tell you.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Since before our wedding.”

I felt something inside me break.

Daniel stepped forward.

“That's not the worst part.”

He opened a box.

Inside was a video cassette.

A handwritten label read:

NAOMI — IF MARCUS BETRAYS YOU.

My heart stopped.

“My father recorded this?”

Daniel nodded.

We found an old player.

The screen flickered.

My father's face appeared.

He looked older than I remembered.

“Naomi,” he said.

“If you're watching this, then my plan failed.”

I started crying.

He continued.

“Marcus was never supposed to be your husband.”

I stared at the screen.

“What?”

My father leaned closer to the camera.

“I allowed him into your life because I needed someone close to the Blackwood network.”

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at me.

“I didn't know he would fall in love with you.”

My father paused.

“Or that he would eventually betray you.”

Then he said the words that changed everything.

May you like

“Your husband wasn't chosen by Blackwood.”

“He was chosen by me.”
