Chapter 10 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

Two months after the trial, the morning sun washed over a charming, two-story farmhouse on three acres of land in rural Delaware County, twenty miles north of Columbus.
Using the full financial restitution ordered by the court—which included the recovery of all stolen funds, the liquidation of Candice’s seized assets, and the return of every single piece of Clara’s pawned jewelry—Gabriel had sold the old Columbus house filled with painful memories and purchased a sanctuary.
Gabriel had officially resigned from his long-haul trucking position, taking a job as chief fleet maintenance manager for a local logistics company ten minutes down the road. He worked Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Every single evening, he was home for dinner.
On the spacious back porch of the farmhouse, Gabriel sat in a wooden rocking chair, holding a warm cup of black coffee.
In the driveway below, Lucas and his new friend from high school, Caleb, were working under the open hood of a restored 1978 Ford F-100 pickup truck—a project Gabriel and Lucas had bought together to rebuild from scratch. Grease smudged Lucas’s cheek as he laughed, handing Caleb a socket wrench.
"Dad! Look!" Lucas called out, stepping back and wiping his hands on a rag. "The engine's turning over!"
Gabriel set his coffee mug down, a broad, warm smile breaking across his face as he walked down the porch steps. "Let's hear it, son."
Lucas climbed into the driver's seat, turned the key, and the classic V8 engine roared to life with a deep, smooth rumbled that echoed happily across the sunlit fields.
Lucas jumped out of the cab, giving Caleb a high-five before running over to his father. He looked up at Gabriel, his face glowing with health, pride, and genuine, unburdened happiness.

"She sounds perfect, Dad," Lucas said proudly.
"She sounds like a brand-new machine, Lucas," Gabriel agreed, wrapping a arm around his son's shoulders, pulling him close. "Just like this family."
