Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

The front door didn't just open; it was thrust wide as Detective Sarah Jenkins stepped into the foyer, flanked by four armed, uniformed officers from the Columbus Police Department and two state investigators from the Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Bureau.
"Nobody move!" Officer Elliott barked, drawing his sidearm and pointing it toward the floor as the officers filled the hallway. "Hands where we can see them!"
Beverly let out a strangled shriek, throwing her hands over her head on the sofa. Evelyn dropped her designer purse, backing away until her spine hit the dining room wall. Wyatt immediately burst into tears, dropping to his knees on the rug.
"Uncle Gabe! Please! I didn't do anything! They made me do it!" Wyatt sobbed, holding his hands up.
Candice, however, didn't back down. She immediately threw herself onto the floor at Detective Jenkins's feet, letting out a loud, hysterical sob of fake distress.
"Officer! Oh, thank God you're here!" Candice cried, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at Gabriel. "Arrest him! He's gone insane! He held us hostage! He's been abusing my nephew and threatening to kill us!"
Detective Jenkins looked down at Candice with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust. She pulled out a sleek digital tablet and held it flat in front of Candice's face.
On the screen, a crystal-clear 4K video feed showed Candice standing in the living room three minutes earlier, her face contorted in rage, shouting into the hidden camera: “So what if I put the little brat in his place?! Half this house belongs to me! I'll call the police right now and tell them you threatened me!”
Candice’s fake crying stopped instantly. Her jaw dropped, her eyes bulging as she stared at her own recorded face on the tablet screen.
"Mrs. Candice Lawson," Detective Jenkins declared, her voice ringing out like iron striking stone. "Or should I say, Candice Miller, Candice Vance, and Candice Thorne. You are under arrest for felony child abuse, child endangerment, grand larceny, identity theft, corporate forgery, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud."
"No!" Candice screamed, thrashing wildly as Officer Elliott grabbed her arms, forcing them behind her back, and clicked the heavy steel handcuffs tightly around her wrists. "This is a setup! Gabriel planted those cameras! He planted those documents!"
"We executed a simultaneous search warrant on the 4th Street Gold & Diamond Exchange thirty minutes ago, Candice," Detective Jenkins informed her coldly as she pulled her up from the floor. "The pawnshop owner is currently in custody. He handed over your complete ledger of stolen jewelry, including Clara Lawson's engagement ring and tea set, along with the cash kickback receipts signed in your name."
Evelyn let out a choked sob as a second officer stepped behind her, pulling her arms back and locking her wrists in steel cuffs. "Evelyn Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy in interstate financial crimes."

"Mom!" Wyatt cried out as an officer guided him toward the door. "Mom, tell them I didn't do anything!"
"Shut your mouth, Wyatt!" Evelyn spat, her refined aristocratic demeanor completely vanishing as she was marched out the front door in chains.
