Chapter 4 - THE BABY THEY HAD ALREADY NAMED

Someone had prepared a nursery for my son.
Not in my house.
Not in Corinne's apartment.
But inside a property connected to Victor Hale.
And they'd given Owen another name.
Oliver Vaughn.
Tessa's last name.
I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
"What does this mean?"
Detective Reed answered carefully.
"It suggests someone may have intended to take custody of your child under a different identity."
My stomach turned.
"Why?"
"We're still investigating."
I looked at the bassinet.
At the tiny blue blankets.
At the wooden sign.
Someone had planned this.
Not for a day.
Not for a week.
Long enough to purchase furniture and prepare a room.
I thought about Tessa.
Her perfectly styled hair.
Her expensive perfume.
The way she'd laughed when I told her Corinne was pregnant.
"Are you happy?" she'd asked.
I'd answered without thinking.
"Of course."
She'd smiled.
But something in her eyes had changed.
At the time, I'd assumed jealousy.
Now I wasn't sure.
Detective Reed continued.
"We also found documents concerning a proposed guardianship arrangement."
I turned sharply.
"Guardianship?"
"The paperwork appears to have been drafted using fraudulent representations. It hasn't been approved by a court."
"Whose name is on it?"
He hesitated.
"Tessa Vaughn."
I felt sick.
"She wanted my child?"
"We need to establish her involvement and intent."
I walked toward the window.
Outside, the morning sun illuminated the same driveway where Corinne used to push Owen's stroller.
I remembered coming home one afternoon and finding her asleep on the couch.
Owen lay safely in his bassinet beside her.
She looked exhausted.
I'd complained that the house was messy.
She'd apologized.
That memory now felt unbearable.
Detective Reed approached.
"Mr. Keaton, we need to ask about your relationship with Ms. Vaughn."
I closed my eyes.
Then told him everything.
The affair.
The trips.
The gifts.
The hotel rooms.
Every lie.
I didn't try to protect myself.
Not anymore.
By noon, my attorney had arranged for an independent forensic review of the company accounts.
The initial findings were devastating.
Victor Hale had been using subsidiaries connected to my real estate developments to move money into fraudulent consulting contracts.
Tessa's company had received significant payments.
My electronic signature appeared on documents I'd never authorized.
And several transactions were connected to the same medical company employing Melissa Hale.
Then Rebecca called.
"Grant, we found something important."
"What?"
"Corinne hired an independent financial investigator six weeks ago."
I froze.
"She did?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't she tell me?"
Rebecca was silent.
Then she answered.
"Because she believed you might be involved."
The words hit harder than I expected.
My wife had been so afraid of what she'd discovered that she couldn't trust her own husband.
And why should she?
I had spent months lying to her.
Rebecca continued.
"The investigator's name is Daniel Mercer."
I frowned.
"I know that name."
"He's a former forensic accountant who worked with your father."
My chest tightened.
My father had died five years earlier.
"Why would Corinne contact him?"
Rebecca hesitated.
"Because your father apparently warned her about Victor Hale before he died."
I went still.
"What?"
She sent me a scanned document.
It was a letter.
My father's handwriting.
Addressed to Corinne.

The final sentence made my blood run cold.
"If Grant ever allows Victor Hale full access to the company, protect yourself and any children you have. Victor knows a secret that could destroy our family."
