Chapter 10 - THE MAN I SAW IN THE MIRROR

I had spent thirty-nine years believing success meant never admitting weakness.

Build the company.

Win the negotiations.

Buy the house.

Protect the reputation.

Never apologize unless absolutely necessary.

My father had taught me to work hard.

But somewhere along the way, I'd confused achievement with character.

And now everything I'd built was collapsing.

The next morning, I stood before the bathroom mirror.

I looked exhausted.

Unshaven.

Older than I remembered.

For the first time, I didn't recognize the man staring back.

I thought about Corinne.

The way she used to wait for me at dinner.

The way she'd leave little notes inside my briefcase.

The way she'd smile whenever I walked into a room.

Then the changes.

She stopped waiting.

Stopped asking questions.

Stopped expecting me to come home.

I'd interpreted her silence as acceptance.

Now I understood it was resignation.

I had been losing her long before she left.

I called Rebecca.

"I want to correct every financial record connected to the fraudulent transfers."

"We're already working on it."

"And I want an independent audit of my entire company."

"That may expose your own negligence."

"I know."

"Potentially serious consequences."

"I know."

Rebecca paused.

"You're sure?"

"Yes."

Then I contacted my board.

I informed them that I would step aside temporarily while investigators reviewed the company's financial controls.

Several directors objected.

Investors panicked.

My public relations team begged me not to make statements without approval.

For once, I stopped caring about appearances.

I cared about the truth.

Later that day, Detective Reed called.

"We have an update."

My heart pounded.

"About Victor?"

"Yes."

Investigators had discovered additional shell companies used to move money through fraudulent development contracts.

Several accounts were connected to Melissa Hale's medical company.

Victor's role appeared extensive.

But the most disturbing discovery involved Tessa.

Her consulting business had received instructions from Victor concerning the attempted guardianship plan.

Emails suggested she'd hoped to become Owen's primary caretaker after Corinne was removed from the family home.

I felt sick.

"Was she going to hurt Corinne?"

"We have evidence of a plan to manipulate legal and medical circumstances, but we won't speculate beyond what the documents support."

I understood.

Still, the fear was unbearable.

That afternoon, Tessa was arrested on charges related to fraud and conspiracy.

Melissa Hale was also taken into custody.

Victor remained under investigation.

The news spread quickly.

Reporters gathered outside my mansion.

Headlines appeared online.

My affair became public.

So did the financial scandal.

My reputation collapsed almost overnight.

I expected to feel humiliated.

Instead, I felt strangely relieved.

The lies were finally ending.

That evening, Mrs. Pearl knocked on my office door.

"Mr. Keaton?"

I looked up.

"Yes?"

"Mrs. Keaton asked me to give you something."

My heart stopped.

She handed me a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Owen.

He was sleeping in a white onesie.

His tiny fist rested beside his cheek.

I stared until my eyes blurred.

On the back, Corinne had written:

He smiled today.

I began crying.

Then I noticed a second note.

Grant, I will never keep Owen from knowing his father if you can be safe and responsible.

But I need you to understand something.

I read the next sentence.

May you like

And my heart broke.

I DIDN'T LEAVE BECAUSE YOU STOPPED LOVING ME. I LEFT BECAUSE I FINALLY STARTED LOVING MYSELF.
