Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT ROMAN STOPPED BEING FEARED

Roman Gallagher had spent years believing his father's death was an unfortunate medical tragedy.

Now Samuel's letter claimed Arthur Whitlock had deliberately caused it.

The evidence was incomplete.

But the accusation changed everything.

Roman didn't shout.

He didn't threaten anyone.

He simply called Detective Hart.

"I have information you need to see."

Within hours, investigators began reviewing Patrick Gallagher's medical history.

They discovered discrepancies between his official treatment records and the medications recorded by a private physician employed by Whitlock's foundation.

Roman sat quietly while Olivia explained the next steps.

"We'll need expert review before we can determine whether a crime occurred."

He nodded.

"I understand."

I sat beside him.

He looked exhausted.

"Are you okay?" I asked.

"No."

The honesty surprised me.

He rubbed his forehead.

"I spent years trying to become the kind of man my father expected."

"And now?"

"Now I'm beginning to realize I never wanted to be him."

I looked at him.

"You don't have to be."

He studied my face.

"Why do you keep saying things like that?"

"Like what?"

"Things that make me believe I can change."

I smiled faintly.

"Maybe because you can."

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Roman reached for my hand.

He stopped halfway.

"May I?"

I nodded.

His fingers closed gently around mine.

No demands.

No games.

Just warmth.

That was when I realized I was no longer afraid of him.

Not because he'd lost his power.

But because he had never used it against me.

Three days later, Mom was discharged from Rosehaven into a supervised recovery program.

Roman helped arrange a comfortable apartment near mine, though the lease and decisions remained entirely in her name.

She insisted on making dinner for everyone.

"Six years of hospital food," she declared. "I'm cooking."

I laughed so hard I cried.

For one evening, life almost felt normal.

Then Detective Hart called.

They had located Samuel Gallagher.

He was living under an assumed name in Vermont.

He had agreed to return to New York and cooperate with investigators.

Roman stood when he heard the news.

"My brother's coming home?"

Olivia confirmed it.

"Yes."

I watched his expression change.

For the first time since meeting him, Roman Gallagher looked hopeful.

But Samuel's return brought another revelation.

He had uncovered documents proving Whitlock's scheme extended far beyond the Onyx Club and the Gallagher family.

And one of those documents identified the person who had ordered my mother's abduction.

The signature belonged to someone I never expected.

May you like

My own uncle.

Thomas Bennett.
