Chapter 11 - THE FINAL MOVE OF ARTHUR WHITLOCK

Arthur Whitlock had been untouchable for twenty years.

He owned businesses, donated to charities, and smiled beside politicians at expensive fundraisers.

But the evidence recovered from my mother's pendant was finally catching up with him.

Investigators had traced millions of dollars through false medical invoices and shell companies.

Samuel Gallagher returned to New York and provided additional records.

Daniel, a forensic accountant working with the district attorney, confirmed the transactions.

Whitlock's entire financial empire began collapsing.

Then he vanished.

Roman stood inside Detective Hart's office while she reviewed the latest information.

"His private aircraft is still at the airport," Olivia said. "His passport hasn't been used."

"Then he's hiding locally," Roman replied.

"Possibly."

I sat beside Mom.

She looked stronger every day.

But hearing Whitlock's name still made her hands tremble.

"He's not going to stop," she whispered.

I squeezed her hand.

"He doesn't control us anymore."

Olivia's phone rang.

She listened.

Then stood.

"We found him."

Roman straightened.

"Where?"

"At an abandoned warehouse in Brooklyn."

I felt a chill.

The same borough where my mother had worked.

Where my childhood had been stolen.

Olivia continued.

"Officers are securing the area. Whitlock may have associates with him."

Roman nodded.

"Let the police handle it."

I looked at him.

A year earlier, he might have sent armed men.

Now he was choosing something different.

Justice.

Not revenge.

Several hours later, authorities arrested Whitlock without further violence.

The news spread across New York.

His companies were placed under investigation.

His accounts were frozen where legally authorized.

And dozens of former employees began coming forward with evidence.

I watched the coverage from Mom's living room.

Roman sat beside me.

For the first time in years, I felt the weight on my chest begin to lift.

Then Detective Hart arrived with a sealed envelope.

"Claire, this was recovered from Whitlock's office."

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph of a young girl standing beside my mother.

The girl looked exactly like me.

But she was older than I had been when Mom disappeared.

I frowned.

"That's impossible."

Mom leaned forward.

Her face went pale.

"Where did you get that?"

Olivia looked at her.

"Do you recognize the girl?"

Mom covered her mouth.

Then she began crying.

"Claire..."

I stared at her.

"Mom, who is she?"

May you like

My mother's voice trembled.

"Your sister."
