Chapter 12 - The Meeting at Warehouse Twelve

Tessa Morgan had made the worst decision of her life.

She'd agreed to meet Grant Kesler alone.

Not because she trusted him.

Because he'd promised to give her proof of who caused her mother's death.

Warehouse Twelve stood nearly empty beneath the gray November sky.

Tessa entered through a side door, clutching a small black case.

Grant waited beside a folding table.

“You came.”

“Where's the evidence?”

Grant smiled.

“Straight to business. Just like your mother.”

Tessa's jaw tightened.

“Don't talk about her.”

“Evelyn was very clever.”

“She was murdered.”

Grant's smile disappeared.

“Be careful what you accuse people of.”

Tessa placed the case on the table.

“Here are the files.”

Grant looked at it.

“Everything?”

“Everything I found.”

He reached for the case.

She stopped him.

“First, tell me what happened.”

Grant sighed.

“Your mother discovered accounts she wasn't supposed to see.”

“And?”

“She became difficult.”

Tessa felt her hands tremble.

“You had her killed?”

Grant stared at her.

“Your mother made enemies. That's all you need to know.”

“No.”

Tessa opened her phone.

“I need the truth.”

Grant stepped closer.

“Put that away.”

She backed up.

“You've spent seven years making me believe I owed you loyalty because you helped my family after she died.”

Grant laughed.

“Loyalty? You were useful because Rafe trusted you.”

Tessa's face drained.

“You used me.”

“Of course.”

He gestured toward the case.

“Now give me the records.”

Tessa shook her head.

“No.”

Grant's expression hardened.

“You really think you can walk away?”

Before she could answer, a voice echoed from the warehouse entrance.

“She can.”

Rafe Calder stepped inside.

Two federal agents followed.

Grant spun around.

For the first time, his confidence cracked.

“Rafe.”

“Step away from her.”

Grant laughed nervously.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

Tessa slowly backed toward the agents.

Grant reached inside his coat.

Rafe moved between him and Tessa.

“Don't.”

Grant hesitated.

Then raised his hands.

The agents approached and secured him.

Within moments, he was in custody.

Tessa sank onto a wooden crate, shaking.

Rafe crouched beside her.

“Are you hurt?”

She shook her head.

“I thought if I brought him the files, he'd finally tell me the truth.”

Rafe looked at her.

“You should have called.”

“I know.”

She began crying.

“I'm sorry, Rafe. For everything. For interrupting your marriage. For making you feel responsible for me.”

He sat beside her.

“You were never wrong to ask for help.”

She looked up.

“But I was wrong to let fear control me. And you were wrong to keep choosing my emergencies over Sloane.”

Rafe nodded.

“Yes.”

Tessa wiped her eyes.

“Go home to your wife.”

Rafe gave a sad smile.

“She hasn't asked me to come home yet.”

“Then earn the invitation.”

Later that evening, investigators searched Grant's office.

They uncovered evidence connecting him to the stolen Whitmore trust and years of fraudulent shipping activity.

But inside a locked drawer, they found something unexpected.

A signed contract.

Dated eight months earlier.

It outlined a plan to transfer control of Calder Maritime if Rafe became incapacitated.

The designated successor wasn't Grant.

It was Malik.

May you like

Rafe's most trusted security chief.

And the document contained Malik's genuine signature.
