Chapter 1 - The Wedding Ring on His Pillow

At 4:43 a.m., Rafe Calder discovered that the most terrifying thing in his Manhattan penthouse wasn't an enemy holding a gun.

It was an empty bed.

His wife's pillow was perfectly arranged. The closet stood half-open, revealing an empty space where her favorite coats had hung. The little overnight bag she kept near the bedroom door was missing.

And resting on his pillow was her wedding ring.

For four years, Rafe had watched powerful men surrender under the weight of his silence. He knew how to close ports, negotiate with enemies, and protect a business empire worth hundreds of millions.

But he had no idea what to do with the small diamond ring trembling between his fingers.

He opened the cream-colored baby-name notebook.

The first page contained two names.

Eleanor. Grace.

Beneath them, in Sloane's familiar handwriting, were the words:

I wanted us to choose together.

Rafe sat on the edge of the bed.

He remembered her face at dinner. The dark green dress. The untouched food. The way she'd pushed his keys toward him without raising her voice.

He had mistaken her calmness for understanding.

Now he understood that she'd been saying goodbye.

His phone rang.

Malik.

“Boss, we've secured the containers. Tessa's safe.”

Rafe stared at the empty side of the bed.

“I need you to find out whether Sloane has security with her.”

Malik hesitated.

“Are we bringing her home?”

“No.”

The answer surprised them both.

“Just make sure nobody is following her. Do not approach her, and don't report her location to me.”

“Understood.”

Rafe ended the call.

He wanted to call his wife a hundred times.

Instead, he typed one message.

I found your note. I'm sorry I made you feel alone. I won't force you to come home. Please let me know if you need anything.

He sent it.

No reply came.

At six fifteen, the penthouse intercom buzzed.

Rafe expected Malik.

Instead, the building concierge sounded uneasy.

“Mr. Calder, your wife left something downstairs before she departed.”

“What?”

“A sealed envelope addressed to your attorney.”

Rafe went down himself.

Inside the envelope were copies of bank statements, shipping invoices, and a handwritten note.

These documents were mailed to me yesterday. I don't know who sent them, but someone is using my name.

Rafe examined the first statement.

An offshore transfer.

Two million dollars.

Authorized through a private account linked to Calder Maritime.

The account holder's name was Sloane Calder.

Rafe's expression turned cold.

His wife had never opened that account.

And the transfer had been made three days earlier.

At 2:07 a.m., while Sloane was asleep beside him.
