Chapter 2 - THE FILE NAMED RAVEN

Matteo landed in Boston twelve hours later.

He did not go home first.

He went directly to the warehouse office where Arthur had assembled three trusted men.

The RAVEN file was projected across a secure monitor.

It had been created six weeks earlier after unusual transfers appeared inside several Rossi-controlled companies.

Nothing large enough to trigger immediate alarm.

Small movements.

Changes in ownership records.

Insurance policies.

Estate documents.

The kind of paperwork violent men ignored until paperwork became a weapon.

Arthur pointed toward the screen.

“We thought someone was preparing for a federal seizure.”

Matteo stared at the documents.

“Who?”

“We didn’t know.”

That was the problem.

Then Arthur opened another file.

Matteo saw Norah’s name.

His jaw locked.

“What is that?”

“A draft trust.”

Beneficiary:

NORAH ROSSI.

Secondary beneficiary:

UNBORN CHILD OF MATTEO ROSSI.

Matteo leaned closer.

“I never authorized this.”

“We know.”

“Who did?”

“Signature page is missing.”

The trust would receive ownership interests in three legitimate Rossi businesses if Matteo died or became incapacitated.

On the surface, it looked protective.

Too protective.

Because the businesses carried hidden liabilities.

Debt.

Regulatory exposure.

Contracts tied to people Matteo no longer trusted.

Someone planned to move contaminated assets into Norah’s name.

If investigators arrived later, she could appear involved.

“Why her?”

Arthur’s expression darkened.

“Because she’s clean.”

Exactly.

Norah had never been part of Matteo’s operations.

No meetings.

No signatures.

No business titles.

She had spent three years refusing even ceremonial positions.

She once told him:

The safest place in your world is outside the paperwork.

Someone intended to drag her inside it anyway.

Matteo’s anger became cold.

“Who had access?”

Arthur listed six names.

Accountants.

Lawyers.

Family.

Then one name made Matteo look up.

Luca Rossi.

His cousin.

His oldest friend.

The man who had stood beside him at his wedding.

“What about Luca?”

Arthur hesitated.

“He requested estate copies last month.”

“Why?”

“Said you asked.”

“I didn’t.”

Silence.

Matteo remembered Luca joking about Norah’s pregnancy.

An heir changes everything.

At the time, Matteo had assumed he meant succession.

Maybe he meant leverage.

“Where is Luca?”

“At the docks.”

“Bring him.”

Arthur nodded.

Then Matteo asked:

“Where is Norah?”

“We found the car she used.”

“Where?”

“South Station.”

Public transit.

Smart.

She abandoned the vehicle and disappeared into thousands of travelers.

No private driver.

No Rossi jet.

No predictable route.

Matteo felt an unwilling flash of admiration.

Norah had learned his world better than he understood hers.

Then Arthur slid something across the table.

A printed email.

Norah had scheduled it to send to herself before leaving.

Subject:

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME.

Inside was a list of names.

Account numbers.

Dates.

Companies.

Not enough to destroy Matteo’s entire empire.

Enough to prove someone had been using her identity.

At the bottom she had written:

Matteo may be cruel, arrogant, and unfaithful. But I do not believe these documents are his.

Matteo read that sentence three times.

She had left him.

Yet she had still separated his betrayal from someone else’s crime.

Then he saw the final line.

I think Luca Rossi is preparing for Matteo to die.

Arthur watched his face.

“She suspected him before we did.”

Matteo folded the page.

“Why?”

Arthur turned the screen again.

One company inside the trust carried a hidden life-insurance arrangement tied to Matteo.

Payout:

$40 million.

Contingent control upon death:

Luca Rossi.

And suddenly Norah’s disappearance was no longer only about escaping a cheating husband.

She might also be running from a man who needed Matteo dead and her blamed afterward.
