Chapter 1 - THE HOUSE WAS EMPTY

The first warning reached Matteo at 6:12 in the morning.

He was standing barefoot on the stone terrace of the Santorini villa when his encrypted phone vibrated.

ARTHUR.

Matteo answered immediately.

“What?”

There was a pause.

Too long.

“Boss, you need to come home.”

Something inside Matteo tightened.

“Norah?”

Another pause.

“Mrs. Rossi is gone.”

The sea below the villa suddenly seemed very far away.

“What do you mean gone?”

“She left sometime last night.”

“How?”

“We’re still reconstructing it.”

Matteo’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“You told me she was resting.”

“She was.”

“You told me the house was secure.”

“It was.”

Matteo turned toward the bedroom.

Harper was asleep beneath white sheets, one bare shoulder visible in the morning light.

For the first time since arriving in Greece, looking at her made him feel nothing.

Not desire.

Not escape.

Nothing.

“Where did Norah go?”

“We don’t know.”

Matteo closed his eyes.

Norah was seven months pregnant.

She moved slowly now.

Her back hurt after twenty minutes in the car.

She slept with three pillows because lying flat made breathing uncomfortable.

She did not simply disappear.

“What did she take?”

“One suitcase.”

“What else?”

“Her documents. Some clothes.”

Arthur hesitated.

“And a few things from your study.”

Matteo went still.

“What things?”

“We don’t know yet.”

“Then find out.”

He ended the call.

Harper stirred behind him.

“What’s wrong?”

Matteo began dressing.

“Trip’s over.”

She sat up.

“What?”

“We’re leaving.”

“You said two weeks.”

“Plans changed.”

Her face hardened.

“This is about her.”

Matteo ignored her.

That made Harper angrier.

“You fly me halfway across the world, then the second your wife refuses to answer the phone, you run home?”

Matteo turned.

The look on his face silenced her.

“My wife is pregnant and missing.”

Harper stared.

Then laughed bitterly.

“Missing? She left you.”

The words landed harder than they should have.

“No.”

Harper pulled the sheet around herself.

“Yes.”

Matteo’s jaw tightened.

“She wants attention.”

“Then why isn’t she calling?”

He said nothing.

Harper smiled without humor.

“You really thought she’d sit in that house while you brought me here?”

“I said enough.”

“No, Matteo. You’ve spent months telling me she’ll never leave.”

He grabbed his watch from the dresser.

“She won’t.”

Even as he said it, the words sounded wrong.

His private flight was airborne within two hours.

Somewhere over the Atlantic, Arthur sent photographs from the house.

Norah’s closet.

Half empty.

Her jewelry remained.

Diamonds.

Watches.

The emerald bracelet Matteo gave her after their last argument.

All untouched.

But her grandmother’s necklace was gone.

So was the worn paperback she read when anxious.

The nursery remained exactly as she had arranged it.

Soft green walls.

White crib.

Tiny folded clothes.

Then Matteo saw the final photograph.

The master bedroom.

On his pillow lay Norah’s wedding ring.

Beside it was a note.

Only one sentence.

You kept telling me everything in this house belonged to you, so I’m leaving it all behind.

For the first time in years, Matteo Rossi felt something dangerously close to panic.

Then Arthur called again.

“We found what she accessed in the study.”

“What?”

“Financial archives.”

Matteo’s face hardened.

“How much is missing?”

Arthur told him.

Not everything.

Not even close.

Exactly enough to matter.

Matteo should have been furious.

Instead he remembered the cardboard box Norah once shoved behind pantry flour when she thought nobody was watching.

He had dismissed it.

Now he understood.

She had been planning this for months.

But Arthur wasn’t finished.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“She copied one folder before leaving.”

“Which folder?”

Arthur said the name.

Matteo stopped breathing.

RAVEN.

That file had nothing to do with escape money.

May you like

It contained evidence that someone inside Matteo’s organization had been preparing to betray him.

And if Norah had opened it, she now knew the traitor’s plan involved her unborn child.
