Chapter 2 - THE EMPTY BED UPSTAIRS

I did not remember leaving the stage.

One second I was staring at Madison.

The next I was running through the ballroom in heels while Julian called hotel security.

Grant came after me.

“Eleanor!”

I ignored him.

The elevator took too long.

I used the stairs.

Six floors.

My chest burned by the time I reached Lily’s hallway.

The guard’s chair was empty.

Her door stood open.

“Lily?”

No answer.

I ran inside.

The bed was empty.

Her silver shoes lay beside it.

Her stuffed rabbit was on the pillow.

But my daughter was gone.

Grant entered behind me.

His face changed.

“Where is she?”

I turned on him.

“You tell me.”

“What?”

“You threatened emergency custody.”

“I didn’t take her.”

“You built an entire case to make me look unstable.”

His jaw tightened.

“Yes, I wanted leverage. I did not take our daughter.”

The honesty stunned me.

He admitted the custody plot.

Just not this.

Hotel security arrived.

The hallway camera showed Lily leaving the suite at 10:58.

Not dragged.

Not crying.

She was holding somebody’s hand.

A woman wearing a hotel employee uniform.

The woman’s face remained turned away.

But Lily was smiling.

Meaning she knew her.

Grant stared at the footage.

“Zoom in.”

The technician enlarged one frame.

A bracelet.

Gold.

Three emerald stones.

I knew it.

Vivian wore it every Christmas.

Grant’s face went white.

“My mother.”

We ran downstairs.

Vivian was gone.

So was Madison.

The ballroom had descended into chaos.

Julian grabbed my arm.

“I froze the company accounts.”

“I don’t care about the company.”

“I know. Listen.”

He showed me a second camera.

Parking garage.

Vivian led Lily toward a black sedan.

Madison stood beside it.

My blood went cold.

Grant swore.

Then the rear door opened.

Someone else sat inside.

A man.

Gray hair.

Heavy build.

I recognized him immediately.

Charles Vale.

Madison’s father.

Former Blackwell CFO.

My father had fired him twelve years earlier after discovering unexplained payments.

I had not seen him since.

Grant stared at the screen.

“What the hell is Charles Vale doing with my mother?”

Julian looked at me.

I suddenly understood something none of us had considered.

Madison had not entered Blackwell alone.

Her father had spent twelve years waiting to return.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Lily’s voice came through.

“Mommy?”

My knees nearly collapsed.

“Baby, where are you?”

“I’m okay.”

Then Vivian took the phone.

“Eleanor, listen carefully.”

I could barely breathe.

“If you want Lily returned tonight, withdraw the injunction.”

“You kidnapped my daughter.”

“No.”

Her voice became strangely urgent.

“I got her out before Charles did.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Madison’s father was coming for her either way.”

“Then why is he with you?”

A pause.

“Because Grant is not the only person in that ballroom who has been lying to you.”

Then the line disconnected.

Thirty seconds later, Julian received a file.

A photograph taken twenty-five years earlier.

My father, Arthur Blackwell.

Charles Vale.

And Vivian Hawthorne.

All three standing over the original Blackwell incorporation documents.

On the back, my father had written:

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, NEVER LET VIVIAN CONTROL THE TRUST.
