Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN I TRUSTED WITH MY CHILD

I ran upstairs.

Lily was safe.

Rachel was gone.

Her purse remained.

Her coat remained.

Her phone lay beside Lily’s coloring book.

The bathroom window was open.

Grant checked Lily himself.

“Did Rachel say anything?”

Lily nodded.

“She said she had to fix something.”

“What?”

“She cried.”

That mattered.

Rachel had not acted like someone escaping with victory.

Julian examined her phone.

One unread message.

KLINE:

YOU HAVE ONE HOUR. BRING THE SECOND TOKEN OR YOUR SON’S RECORDS GO PUBLIC.

I stared at Julian.

“Rachel has a son?”

“Not that I know.”

Grant remembered first.

“Evan.”

Years earlier, Rachel had told us her younger brother Evan died from an overdose.

Apparently that was not true.

A private rehabilitation file showed Evan Monroe alive and living under a protected identity after witnessing financial crimes connected to Blackwell trial sites.

Thomas Kline had hidden him.

Rachel had been forced to cooperate for years to keep him alive and anonymous.

Forged signatures.

Calendar manipulation.

Credential access.

She had done all of it.

But under threat.

That did not erase the damage.

It changed the shape of it.

We tracked Rachel to Blackwell headquarters.

She had entered my office using her credentials.

Grant and I arrived minutes later.

Rachel stood beside my desk holding a small security token.

Tears covered her face.

“I’m sorry.”

“Where is Kline?”

“He wants the token.”

“What does it open?”

“My father’s archive had two physical keys.

One hidden in the gala folder Julian carried.

The other had apparently been stored in my executive office for years without my knowledge.

Together they could access the master patent repository.

“Rachel, give it to me.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

She showed me her phone.

Live video.

A man restrained inside a warehouse.

Evan.

Alive.

Kline stood behind him.

“Midnight,” Rachel whispered. “Or he kills him.”

Grant said:

“We’ll get your brother.”

“You don’t know where he is.”

Julian did.

One reflection in the video showed the Blackwell harbor laboratory.

Closed three years earlier.

We moved quickly.

Federal agents surrounded the property.

I stayed in the command vehicle with Lily safely elsewhere.

Grant insisted on joining Julian.

Not as my husband.

Not as Blackwell executive.

As a cooperating witness who knew the building.

Before he left, he looked at me.

“I know I don’t get to ask you for anything.”

“Then don’t.”

He nodded.

Then:

“Be careful.”

That I allowed.

Twenty minutes later, agents entered.

Evan was found alive.

Rachel surrendered the token.

Thomas Kline was not there.

Again.

But he had left something behind.

One laptop.

One recorded message.

Kline appeared on screen.

“Eleanor, your father always thought the company belonged to his bloodline.”

He smiled.

“He was wrong.”

Then he displayed a birth certificate.

ARTHUR BLACKWELL.

Father:

HENRY BLACKWELL.

Mother:

MARGARET KLINE.

My father and Thomas Kline shared a mother.

May you like

Thomas was my father’s half-brother.

And that meant he had a potential claim to the Blackwell trust.
