Chapter 7 - The Company Adrian Never Knew Was Mine

Adrian called me six times after the board meeting.

On the seventh, I answered.

“Tell me you’re bluffing.”

“I’m not.”

“That technology belongs to Vale Meridian.”

“No.”

“You developed it while working here.”

“I developed the first version eighteen months before we married.”

Silence.

“Our company paid for upgrades.”

“And received expanded license rights.”

“You hid this from me.”

That almost made me laugh.

“It’s in every annual intellectual-property schedule.”

He didn’t read them.

I did.

For years.

“Can you cancel the license?” he asked.

“Yes.”

His breathing changed.

“Would you?”

“If the company is sold through a transaction that violates the license conditions.”

“Marcus’s deal would trigger it?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then he tried what had always worked.

Softness.

“Evelyn.”

I closed my eyes.

“Don’t.”

“We built this together.”

“No. I built parts of it while you took credit.”

“That’s not fair.”

“Neither was moving your pregnant ex into my bedroom.”

He hung up.

An hour later, Claire found me at a hotel.

I had finally left the house.

She looked exhausted.

“Adrian knows about the baby.”

My chest tightened.

“What?”

“Marcus told him.”

Of course.

“How bad?”

“Adrian threw me out.”

I stared at her.

“You moved out?”

“He had security pack my things.”

The irony was almost beautiful.

Claire sat across from me.

“I deserve some of it.”

“Not homelessness.”

“I have somewhere.”

“Good.”

She looked at me.

“I’m going to testify to the board.”

“About?”

“Everything.”

“Even your role?”

“Yes.”

That mattered.

Then she handed me an ultrasound envelope.

I didn’t take it.

“What is that?”

“Paternity test.”

My stomach tightened.

“You already know?”

“Yes.”

“Who is the father?”

She looked directly at me.

“Marcus.”

The room went silent.

Marcus had spent months planning to buy Adrian’s company while secretly fathering a child with Adrian’s former girlfriend.

But Claire wasn’t finished.

“He knew.”

“What?”

“Marcus knew from the beginning.”

“Then why let Adrian believe the baby was his?”

“Leverage.”

Of course.

Marcus needed Claire inside Adrian’s home.

Inside his marriage.

Close enough to influence him.

Close enough to destabilize me.

The pregnancy made the arrangement emotionally explosive enough to remove me without corporate questions.

I stared at Claire.

“You were part of the plan.”

“At first.”

“Why stop?”

She touched her stomach.

“Because Marcus told me that once the acquisition closed, he’d send me money and I should disappear.”

Her voice cracked.

“He never intended to leave his wife.”

I almost felt pity.

Almost.

Then she whispered:

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“Marcus’s wife knows.”

I frowned.

“About you?”

“About everything.”

“Why would she allow it?”

May you like

Claire’s eyes filled with fear.

“Because she’s the actual buyer.”
