Chapter 4 - The Man Adrian Secretly Brought Back

I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because sometimes betrayal becomes so repetitive it turns absurd.

“Adrian rehired Marcus?”

“Not officially.”

Claire looked ashamed.

“They created private entities together.”

“How long?”

“Two years.”

Two years.

While I repaired acquisitions.

While I negotiated bank covenants.

While I fought to protect Vale Meridian from risks I thought came from incompetence.

Some of those risks had been deliberate.

“What entities?”

Claire listed three.

I recognized two names immediately.

They appeared in Daniel’s transfer map.

Shell companies.

Advisory firms.

A real-estate partnership.

Marcus had been sitting behind Adrian’s financial decisions the entire time.

“Why are you telling me?”

Claire looked at her hands.

“Because Adrian thinks I’m completely dependent on him.”

“Are you?”

“No.”

“Then leave.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

Her eyes filled.

“Because Marcus threatened me.”

There it was.

The second system running beneath my marriage.

Marcus had invested Claire’s consulting money through accounts he controlled.

Then used her pregnancy and past relationship with Adrian as leverage.

If Claire exposed him, he would release messages making it appear she and Adrian had deliberately defrauded investors together.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Did you know company money was being used?”

“Not at first.”

“At first.”

Her silence answered.

I stood.

“You’re not innocent.”

“I know.”

That mattered.

She didn’t say Adrian made me.

Marcus manipulated me.

I was pregnant.

She simply said:

“I know.”

Then she opened her phone.

“I have everything.”

Texts.

Voice notes.

Transfer instructions.

Photographs of Marcus meeting Adrian.

A private ledger.

I stared.

“Why collect this?”

“Insurance.”

Of course.

Everyone around Adrian had learned the same lesson.

Keep leverage.

Hide evidence.

Wait.

I took nothing.

“Send it to outside counsel.”

Claire looked surprised.

“You don’t want it?”

“I don’t want private weapons.”

She laughed bitterly.

“You really are different from them.”

“No.”

I looked toward the boardroom.

“I just learned later.”

That evening, I returned home to find my bedroom door locked.

My bedroom.

The one Adrian had moved Claire into.

I knocked once.

Adrian opened it.

He looked exhausted.

“You’ve been talking to her.”

“Yes.”

“What did she tell you?”

“Ask Claire.”

He stepped into the hallway.

“You’re still my wife.”

“That sentence is becoming less useful every time you say it.”

His face hardened.

“You signed the resignation. You gave up your authority.”

“Operational authority.”

I held his gaze.

“Not ownership.”

He stared at me.

Then smiled.

Coldly.

“Check the shareholder ledger.”

My stomach tightened.

I did.

At 11:17 that night, I opened the updated capitalization table.

My twenty-two percent stake was gone.

Transferred four days earlier.

Recipient:

Vale Meridian Executive Trust.

Trustee:

Adrian Vale.

My signature appeared on the transfer authorization.

Perfectly forged.
