Chapter 7 - THE MAN BEHIND THE FAMILY

“Put the gun down.”
Daniel stood behind me.
The attorney laughed.
“You still think this is about money.”
I stared at him.
“You're R.V.”
He smiled.
“Very good.”
“Richard Vale.”
“Yes.”
Mark looked horrified.
“You told me you'd protect us.”
Richard looked at him.
“I protected myself.”
Denise stepped forward.
“You promised me.”
“I promised you nothing.”
She began crying.
“You said everything would be fine.”
Richard laughed.
“Everything was fine until Lena started asking questions.”
I looked at him.
“You used my family.”
“No.”
“You forged my signature.”
“Technically, I authorized the process.”
“You stole money.”
“I moved assets.”
“You created fake insurance claims.”
He shrugged.
“Those were Denise's idea.”
Denise stared at him.
“You told me to do it!”
Richard's expression hardened.
“And you did.”
Everything was collapsing.
Not just the family.
The entire structure behind the business.
Daniel quietly moved toward the door.
Richard noticed.
“Don't.”
Daniel stopped.
“You have nowhere to go.”
Daniel smiled.
“You're wrong.”
He pressed a button on his phone.
A siren sounded outside.
Richard's face changed.
“Who did you call?”
“Everyone.”
Police cars filled the street.
Then federal agents entered.
Richard raised the gun.
Daniel shouted:
“Put it down!”
Richard hesitated.
Then Lily began crying upstairs.
My heart broke.
I turned instinctively toward the stairs.
Richard looked at me.
“You see?”
He smiled.
“That's why they chose you.”
“What?”
“You're emotional.”
“No.”
“You just gave yourself away.”
I looked at him.
“You don't know anything about me.”
He stepped closer.
“You've been predictable your entire life.”
I shook my head.
“You made one mistake.”
“What?”
“You thought being a mother made me weak.”
The officers moved closer.
Richard raised the gun.
Then Mark stepped between us.
“Don't.”
Richard stared at him.
“You'd protect her?”
Mark nodded.
“She doesn't deserve this.”
Richard laughed.
“You signed the documents.”
“I know.”
“You helped build it.”
“I know.”
“You're going to prison.”
Mark looked at me.
“I know.”
Then he turned toward Richard.
“But she's not going.”
Richard hesitated.
That was enough.
The officers tackled him.
The gun fell.
Within seconds, he was handcuffed.
The house became silent.
I ran upstairs.
Lily was crying.
I picked her up.
She immediately stopped.
I held her close.
My mother came into the nursery.
She was crying.
“I am so sorry.”
I looked at her.
“I know.”
“What will you do?”
I kissed Lily's forehead.
“I don't know.”
Then Daniel entered.
He held up the ledger.
“We need to talk.”
“What now?”
“There are names in here that will shock you.”
“Who?”
He looked at me.
“People outside your family.”
“How high?”
He hesitated.
“High enough that the case will become national news.”
I felt my stomach drop.
“What did my father discover?”
Daniel opened the ledger.
The final page contained a list.
Insurance companies.
Banks.
Political donors.
Law firms.
And one last name.
A federal judge.
The same judge who had approved several of the suspicious insurance claims.
I stared.
“This is bigger than us.”
Daniel nodded.
“And someone knew we were going to find it.”
“How?”
He showed me the final entry.
A payment had been made the night before.
To an account belonging to a private investigator.
The memo said:
STOP LENA.
I looked at the date.
Yesterday.
Someone was still trying to stop me.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice whispered:
“You think Richard was the end?”
I said nothing.
He continued:
“He was only the messenger.”
Then the call ended.
May you like
A second later, another message appeared.
LOOK UNDER YOUR MOTHER'S HOUSE.
