Chapter 3 - THE SECRET BEHIND PROJECT HARBOR

My father had been dead for six years.
I stared at Denise.
“You're lying.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“My father had nothing to do with this.”
“He did.”
“How?”
Denise looked toward Mark.
“Tell her.”
Mark rubbed his face.
“I didn't know everything.”
“You keep saying that.”
“I swear.”
I turned to Daniel.
“Find out.”
He nodded.
Within an hour, we had uncovered a corporation registered under my father's name.
It had been created two years before his death.
The registered agent was a law firm in another state.
The listed purpose was vague:
CONSULTING AND ASSET MANAGEMENT.
But the bank records told another story.
Money moved into the corporation from Whitaker Family Catering.
Then disappeared into offshore accounts.
I felt sick.
“My father was involved?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not necessarily.”
“What do you mean?”
“The corporation was created after his death.”
I stared at him.
“That isn't possible.”
“It means someone used his identity.”
My mother's expression changed.
“That's what I suspected.”
I turned.
“You knew?”
“Not until last year.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I didn't have proof.”
She opened another file.
Inside was an email.
Sent from Mark's account.
To Denise.
Subject: LENA'S SIGNATURE.
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
The message was short.
She won't notice if we use the digital file from the mortgage application.
I couldn't breathe.
Mark stepped toward me.
“Lena, please.”
I backed away.
“You wrote that.”
“I was pressured.”
“By your mother?”
He nodded.
“For how long?”
“Almost two years.”
I stared at him.
Two years.
He had kissed me goodnight.
Held my hand at doctor's appointments.
Talked about our future.
And during all of it, he had been discussing how to use my identity.
My mother came closer.
“There's more.”
Daniel opened the next file.
A recorded phone call.
Mark's voice.
Denise's voice.
And another man.
The third voice was unfamiliar.
The recording began with Denise saying:
“She'll be vulnerable after the baby.”
The man answered:
“Then that's when you move.”
My heart stopped.
Move what?
The man continued:
“The house, the business, the debt. Everything.”
Denise asked:
“And Mark?”
“He'll do what he's told.”
Mark said nothing.
Then the unknown man said something that made the room silent.
“If Lena discovers the trust, we're finished.”
I looked at my mother.
“What trust?”
She closed her eyes.
“I was hoping you would never need to know.”
“Mom.”
She sat down.
“Your grandmother created a family trust before she died.”
“What does it contain?”
“The original catering business.”
I frowned.
“I thought Dad owned it.”
“He managed it.”
“And I?”
“You inherited controlling rights when you turned twenty-five.”
I stared.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?”
“Because your father believed your marriage would make you easier to manipulate.”
My chest tightened.
“My marriage?”
My mother nodded.
“He transferred operational control to Mark without telling you.”
Daniel looked shocked.
“That would explain the loan.”
“What?”
“If Mark controlled the company, he could use its assets.”
I suddenly understood.
The business wasn't collapsing.
It was being stripped.
Piece by piece.
And I was supposed to become responsible for the debt after they emptied it.
But there was still one question.
“Who was the man in the recording?”
Daniel replayed the final seconds.
The voice said:
“Once she gives birth, she'll be too distracted to fight.”
Then the recording ended.
I knew that voice.
I had heard it at our wedding.
At Christmas.
At family dinners.
I looked at Mark.
“Your brother.”
Mark went completely still.
His brother, Ryan, had always been the quiet one.
The harmless one.
May you like
The one everyone trusted with money.
And apparently, the one who had been planning to destroy me.
