Chapter 14 - THE LAST THING LUCIA HID

The lullaby led us back to the nursery.

Not because of the melody itself.

Because of where Lucia always played it.

A small white music box sat on the shelf between Theo’s and Nora’s cribs.

I had seen it every day.

Nobody had examined it because it looked ordinary.

That had been Lucia’s strategy from the beginning.

Hide important things where important people never looked.

Inside the base, Marco found a sealed envelope.

This one was not addressed to me.

It was addressed:

TO MY CHILDREN, WHEN THEY ARE SAFE.

I couldn’t open it.

Not yet.

That belonged to Theo, Miles, and Nora someday.

But beneath it was a final flash drive.

The video showed Lucia sitting in the nursery while she was seven months pregnant.

She looked tired.

But she was smiling.

“If Adrien finds this,” she began, “then hopefully the danger is over.”

She explained everything.

Evelyn’s attempt to alter the family trust.

Carlo’s financial crimes.

Gable’s compromised loyalty.

The threats.

Lucia had been gathering enough evidence to expose everyone at once.

But the most important thing she revealed had nothing to do with money.

She had already legally amended the trust before her death.

The forged version Evelyn intended to rely upon was invalid.

Lucia had appointed an independent national trust company to protect the children’s inheritance.

Evelyn could never have controlled it.

“She did all this for nothing,” Marco whispered.

“No.”

I shook my head.

“She did it because she thought she could.”

That difference had nearly cost my children their peace.

Lucia’s video continued.

“I also changed one more thing.”

She smiled directly at the camera.

“The Moretti children do not inherit control of Adrien’s organization.”

My breath caught.

“They inherit education trusts, legitimate investments, and the family home. Nothing else.”

Even before I chose to walk away, Lucia had protected them from inheriting my darkness.

At the end, she touched her stomach.

“And if Sophie is nearby someday, tell her Aunt Lucia kept her promise.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Sophie looked confused.

“What promise?”

Lucia answered from the screen as if she could hear her.

“That no child should ever be treated as too small to matter.”

The video ended.

Three months later, the reopened crash investigation formally concluded that Lucia’s death involved deliberate interference with her vehicle.

Prosecutors announced that evidence connected Evelyn to the chain of events.

The nightmare finally had a name.

And for the first time since Lucia died, I knew the truth.

But I still had one promise left to keep.
