Chapter 11 - THE VAN AT THE EAST GATE

At 11:46, motion sensors detected a van near the east service road.

Nobody inside my house breathed normally after that.

Marco locked down the estate.

The triplets were moved to the interior safe room with Elena and Sophie while my attorney contacted law enforcement and the investigators already handling Evelyn’s case.

I did not chase anyone.

I did not order retaliation.

For the first time in my adult life, I let legitimate authorities take control.

Maybe Lucia would have been proud of that.

The van never reached the house.

Police stopped it outside the property.

Inside were forged guardianship papers, children’s car seats, and documents directing a private transport service to remove the triplets under supposed court authority.

No valid court order existed.

Evelyn wasn’t inside.

But one of her employees was.

By 2:00 a.m., the emergency custody petition had collapsed.

The judge postponed everything after reviewing the evidence my attorney submitted.

By sunrise, investigators had warrants for several of Evelyn’s offices.

The babies slept through most of it.

Sophie did too.

She was curled on a sofa with Rosie tucked beneath her chin.

I stood in the doorway watching her.

Elena came beside me.

“She saved them.”

“She did.”

“A four-year-old.”

I looked at Sophie’s tiny hand resting against the doll.

“Adults assume children don’t notice things.”

Elena smiled.

“Mrs. Moretti never made that mistake.”

That sentence stayed with me.

At the courthouse later that morning, Evelyn finally appeared.

She was exactly the woman from Lucia’s photographs.

Platinum hair.

Black coat.

Perfect posture.

She looked at me without fear.

Her attorney immediately requested privacy.

Mine refused.

The judge reviewed Lucia’s video.

Rebecca’s statement.

Gable’s recording.

The transmitter.

The ultrasound equipment.

The petition was dismissed.

Then investigators approached Evelyn outside the courtroom.

For the first time, she looked frightened.

But before she was taken away for questioning, she leaned toward me.

“You think Lucia told you everything?”

I said nothing.

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“She didn’t.”

Then she whispered:

“Ask Elena who Sophie’s father is.”

I turned.

May you like

Across the hallway, Elena had heard her.

The color disappeared from her face.
