Chapter 9 - THE EMPIRE MY GRANDFATHER LEFT ME A KEY TO

Control.

Not money.

Not dividends.

Control.

Thomas Bennett had structured the original partnership so carefully that no one noticed the final trigger.

If a Bennett descendant married a Moretti heir and later proved financial misconduct against that spouse or family, the Bennett voting block expanded through dormant shares.

Evelyn recalculated everything.

Forty-eight percent.

Then with several independent minority shareholders who had already requested reform?

Enough to remove Adrian as chairman of the legitimate companies.

I stared at the numbers.

“I could take his company.”

Evelyn corrected me.

“You could take control of its board.”

I looked toward Adrian.

He was sitting across the conference room.

He had asked to attend.

I had agreed.

For once, he wasn’t the most powerful person at the table.

“How does that feel?” I asked.

He understood the question.

“Terrifying.”

“Good.”

He almost smiled.

Then I became serious.

“I don’t want your empire.”

“I know.”

“But I also won’t let Sophia or Matteo take it.”

He nodded.

“What do you want?”

I looked at Evelyn.

Then back at Adrian.

“Legitimate businesses separated from criminal operations.”

His expression changed.

“Claire—”

“No.”

I held his gaze.

“You married me partly because my inheritance could strengthen your family.”

He lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Now that inheritance gives me leverage.”

Silence.

“I’m using it.”

Adrian looked toward his attorney.

Then at me.

“If I agree?”

“Independent board.”

He swallowed.

“Compliance.”

“Yes.”

“No criminal money touching the hotels.”

“Yes.”

“And you step down as chairman during the investigation.”

His jaw tightened.

That one hurt.

Good.

Then he nodded.

“Yes.”

I blinked.

He had agreed.

No fight.

No threat.

Maybe he knew he had lost the right to demand anything.

The restructuring began.

Publicly, it looked like corporate reform.

Privately, it was the first crack in an empire built on fear.

Then Lorenzo asked for another meeting.

He seemed weaker.

But clearer.

“There is one thing Adrian doesn’t know.”

My stomach tightened.

Adrian looked at him.

“What?”

Lorenzo’s eyes filled with tears.

“Sophia isn’t Victor Lane’s biological daughter.”

Silence.

Then Adrian frowned.

“Whose daughter is she?”

Lorenzo looked toward Teresa.

Teresa went white.

I watched both of them.

Then she whispered:

“No.”

Lorenzo closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Adrian stood.

“Dad.”

Lorenzo’s voice broke.

“Sophia is mine.”

The room went completely still.

Adrian stared at his father.

Then at Teresa.

Then back at Lorenzo.

His childhood sweetheart.

The woman his family once wanted him to marry.

May you like

Was actually his half sister.

And Sophia had known.
