Chapter 1 - THE HOTEL ROOM HE NEVER KNEW ABOUT

By the time Adrian realized I had been planning to leave for weeks, I was already twenty-three floors above downtown Chicago in a hotel room booked under my maiden name.

Claire Bennett.

Not Claire Moretti.

Just Claire.

I locked the door behind me, set my suitcase beside the bed, and stared at the room.

It was small.

Plain.

Nothing like the mansion I had lived in for three years.

And I had never felt richer.

My phone began vibrating almost immediately.

ADRIAN.

I watched it ring.

Then stop.

Then ring again.

Seven missed calls became twelve.

Then twenty.

Finally, a message appeared.

Come home.

Not please.

Not I’m sorry.

Just an order.

I laughed.

Then another message arrived.

Claire, this is ridiculous.

I turned the phone facedown.

For weeks, I had been preparing.

New bank account.

Private attorney.

Copies of my passport and financial documents.

A safe-deposit box containing evidence I hoped I would never need.

Because the problem in my marriage had never really been pecan pie.

It wasn’t the handbag Sophia borrowed.

Or the dress.

Or the slippers.

It was the fact that every time I asked Adrian to choose respect, he chose convenience.

And every time Sophia crossed a boundary, he trained me to apologize for noticing.

I sat on the bed.

Then opened my suitcase.

Beneath my sweaters was a blue folder.

Inside were photographs.

Bank statements.

Hotel receipts.

And messages between Adrian and Sophia.

Enough to prove the affair.

Enough to make the divorce ugly.

But there was something else.

A document my attorney found three weeks earlier.

A transfer agreement.

Adrian had moved shares in three Moretti hotels into a trust.

Beneficiary:

Sophia Lane.

My stomach had dropped when I first saw it.

Not because of the money.

Because the transfer date was our second wedding anniversary.

The same day Adrian gave me a diamond bracelet and told me I was the most important woman in his life.

My phone rang again.

This time, not Adrian.

My lawyer.

Evelyn Cross.

“Claire?”

“I’m out.”

She exhaled.

“Good.”

Then her voice changed.

“Are you alone?”

“Yes.”

“Lock the door.”

My stomach tightened.

“It is.”

She hesitated.

“There’s something you need to know.”

“What?”

“The hotel shares Adrian transferred to Sophia?”

“Yes.”

“They were never his to give away.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“They belonged to you.”

My blood ran cold.

May you like

Then Evelyn whispered:

“Claire, your husband has been moving your inheritance into Sophia’s name for almost two years.”
