Chapter 7 - THE COUPLE WHO THOUGHT LILY WAS THEIRS

Evan and Laura Whitmore were not villains.
That disappointed the part of me that wanted clean enemies.
They had spent nine years trying to become parents.
Three failed IVF cycles.
Two miscarriages.
One disrupted adoption.
Then Daniel Price offered them a donor-embryo surrogacy arrangement.
He told them all parental consents were complete.
They paid.
Claire carried.
Then something changed.
At seven months, Claire learned the embryo had not been legally donated.
She panicked.
The Whitmores panicked too.
Lawyers became involved.
Daniel disappeared behind confidentiality agreements.
Claire refused to sign final parentage paperwork.
The Whitmores threatened court.
Then backed away after receiving a refund.
Why?
Laura explained when we met through attorneys.
“Daniel told us the genetic mother had resurfaced.”
Me.
Except I had not.
“He said you were unstable.”
I almost laughed.
That word again.
Women become unstable whenever a man needs their decision discounted.
Laura continued.
“We were terrified of taking someone else’s baby.”
She cried.
“So we walked away.”
Claire gave birth alone.
Daniel’s office covered the hospital bill.
Then Claire moved.
Raised Lily herself.
When Claire eventually found me, perhaps she intended to tell me.
Then fear.
Time.
Friendship.
Death.
The truth never arrived cleanly.
I asked Laura:
“Did you ever see Lily?”
“Once.”
At birth.
Laura held her for twelve minutes.
Then Claire asked everyone to leave.
My heart hurt for her too.
Not because she had a claim over Lily.
Because she had been manipulated into loving a child she believed would become hers.
Daniel Price had turned longing into revenue.
After the meeting, Mike waited outside.
“Can we talk?”
“No.”
“Jessica.”
“Not today.”
He respected that.
Small improvement.
Then Tiffany approached me.
She had resigned from her current hospital administration job pending investigation.
Not because she had been charged.
Because she had once altered a Hawthorne record.
“What record?”
I asked.
“Yours.”
My entire body stiffened.
She explained.
When she realized Daniel had transferred the embryo without my signed consent, she changed the electronic status from CONSENT COMPLETE to REVIEW REQUIRED.
Trying to stop further action.
Daniel changed it back.
Then blamed Tiffany internally.
She left Hawthorne months later.
“Why didn’t you go to police?”
“I was twenty-four.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“No.”
She swallowed.
“I was scared of my father.”
Better answer.
Not excuse.
Truth.
Then she handed Marissa another file.
A settlement account.
Daniel had paid money into a trust after Claire refused to complete the Whitmore parentage paperwork.
Beneficiary:
Lily Donovan.
Current value:
$612,000.
My eyes widened.
“Claire knew?”
“Yes.”
“She never touched it.”
“Why?”
Tiffany opened Claire’s signed instruction.
Funds reserved exclusively for Lily until adulthood. No payment to Claire.
Claire had refused to profit.
Then one attached note:
If Jessica Bennett ever becomes Lily’s legal parent, transfer trustee communication directly to her.
Claire had planned for me.
Long before the accident.
Then Marissa turned to the final page.
Secondary guardian nomination.
If Jessica Bennett cannot serve:
Rachel Morgan.
My best friend.
May you like
Rachel had known Claire too.
And suddenly I realized Rachel might know more than she had ever told me.
