Chapter 10 - THE FORGED COMPLAINT

The forged complaint changed Mike.
Not enough to erase what he had done.
Enough to force him to see how manipulation feels from the inside.
Daniel had created a fake complaint in Mike’s name alleging:
Patient Jessica Bennett was psychologically unable to continue treatment.
All remaining reproductive material should be disposed pursuant to Michael Carter’s authority.
It had been used internally to justify restricted communication.
Mike stared.
“I never wrote this.”
“I believe you.”
He looked at me.
“Thank you.”
“Don’t make it sentimental.”
He almost smiled.
Then Marissa pointed out the obvious.
“If Daniel forged both parties’ positions, he created an artificial conflict.”
Jessica wanted continued control.
Mike supposedly wanted destruction.
Daniel could then tell each side something different.
Classic strategy.
Separate.
Confuse.
Monetize.
Tiffany found more.
Daniel had been negotiating with the Whitmores before our final embryo reached day six.
That meant Claire may have been selected before he even knew whether an embryo existed.
This was not a desperate last-minute decision.
It was a business pipeline.
Investigators identified two other patient cases with similar patterns.
Daniel’s estate became subject to civil claims.
Hawthorne’s successor insurer entered settlement discussions.
Mike asked:
“What happens to Lily’s trust?”
“Protected,” Marissa said.
“It belongs to Lily.”
Good.
Then Mike looked at me.
“What happens to us?”
“There is no us.”
“I meant legally.”
“Then say legally.”
His jaw tightened.
Old habits wanted to become defensiveness.
He stopped.
“Legally, what happens?”
Better.
Marissa explained.
Mike could seek parental recognition.
But because Lily already had a stable legal parent and had never known him, courts would prioritize her welfare.
No automatic joint custody.
No instant father role.
Gradual contact.
Therapeutic guidance.
Possibly legal parentage later depending on jurisdictional rulings and best-interest findings.
Mike nodded.
“I’ll do whatever they recommend.”
I studied him.
Five years earlier, he walked away because motherhood had become painful and inconvenient.
Now fatherhood would require patience without guaranteed reward.
This would reveal more about him than any apology.
Then Tiffany said:
“There’s something else.”
I almost laughed.
Of course.
Daniel had kept an audio recording.
His last attorney interview.
He discussed my case.
We listened.
Daniel’s voice sounded old.
Tired.
He said:
Jessica Bennett was never supposed to find Claire.
The phrase chilled me.
Then:
Claire selected the county clinic because she knew Jessica worked there. I tried to move her care. She refused.
So Claire had actively resisted Daniel.
Then the attorney asked:
Why was Jessica’s case valuable?
Daniel answered:
Because Michael Carter’s family paid.
Mike went still.
“What?”
His family.
Not the Whitmores.
Not Daniel alone.
Someone related to Mike had put money into the arrangement.
The attorney asked:
Who?
Daniel replied:
His mother.
Mike whispered:
May you like
“My mom?”
And now the cruelty from five years ago had a new witness.
