Chapter 7 - TERESA'S LAST LIE

Teresa had lied only once to Karen.

But it had lasted twenty-two years.

The original ledger was hidden beneath the floorboards of Teresa’s old apartment.

She had kept it because Rebecca made her promise.

Elias read every page.

His father’s name appeared repeatedly.

So did Emilio’s father.

So did several people still alive and powerful.

Elias closed the book.

“If I release this, everything my family built could collapse.”

Teresa looked at him.

“Then decide what matters more.”

The family name.

Or the truth.

Elias chose before sunrise.

His attorneys copied the ledger and delivered it to federal investigators.

Then Elias called every manager in his organization and ordered a complete freeze on questionable accounts.

Emilio learned within an hour.

And panicked.

Karen, meanwhile, had a more immediate emergency.

Toby collapsed at breakfast.

His spoon hit the floor.

Then his body followed.

“Toby!”

The ambulance reached them in seven minutes.

Karen rode beside him, holding his hand while monitors screamed.

Dr. Shaw met them at the emergency entrance.

His expression told her everything.

They could no longer wait twelve days.

The procedure had to happen now.

Karen signed the authorization.

Then hospital billing arrived.

She almost laughed.

Her brother was struggling to breathe and someone was discussing deposits.

Before Karen could answer, the administrator checked the computer.

“Actually… never mind.”

Karen looked up.

“What?”

“The entire balance has been guaranteed.”

“By who?”

The woman hesitated.

“The donor requested confidentiality.”

Karen knew immediately.

Elias.

She found him in the hallway twenty minutes later.

“I can’t accept this.”

“You can.”

“I don’t want to owe you.”

“You don’t.”

“Then why?”

Elias looked through the glass toward Toby.

“Because your mother protected me when nobody else did.”

Karen stopped breathing.

Teresa had not yet told her that part.

Elias explained.

For once, Karen had no argument.

Tears came before she could stop them.

Hours later Toby was taken into surgery.

While Karen waited, her phone buzzed.

A security-camera photograph appeared from an unknown number.

It showed Emilio Baron entering Ridgemont through a side entrance.

Timestamp: twenty minutes earlier.

Then another message appeared.

HE KNOWS NAEN HAS THE FILES.

Karen called Naen.

No answer.

She called again.

Nothing.

At Ridgemont, Naen’s classroom lights were still on.

But the room was empty.

On the floor beside her desk lay her broken phone.

And written across the blackboard were four words:

KAREN, DON'T TRUST BIANCA.
