Chapter 6 - HER MOTHER HAD LEFT MORE THAN A PHOTOGRAPH

Karen did not sleep.
At 3:00 a.m., she removed the old photograph from the wall.
Rebecca Marsh stood outside a hospital in her gray uniform.
Karen had looked at that photograph thousands of times.
This time she noticed something taped behind the cardboard backing.
A key.
Small.
Brass.
Number 314 engraved into it.
Karen stared.
Toby appeared behind her holding his blanket.
“What is that?”
“I don’t know.”
But Teresa did.
When Karen showed her the key the following morning, the older woman covered her mouth.
“Your mother kept it.”
“Kept what?”
Teresa finally told Karen everything.
Twenty-two years earlier, Rebecca had hidden Elias from men connected to his father’s rivals.
Afterward she had accidentally discovered financial records abandoned in the hospital supply room.
Names.
Payments.
Political donations.
Rebecca became frightened.
Teresa had told her to destroy them.
Rebecca refused.
“She said one day somebody innocent might need the truth.”
Karen held up the key.
“Where does it go?”
“South Station.”
Locker 314 had disappeared during renovation years ago.
But station property records showed unclaimed contents had been transferred to municipal storage.
Elias’s attorney secured access.
Inside the old evidence container was a metal box.
Rebecca’s handwriting covered one envelope.
FOR KAREN — ONLY IF THEY COME BACK.
Karen opened it.
Inside were copies of financial ledgers and one cassette tape.
The recording was damaged but playable.
Rebecca’s voice filled the room.
She described a man who had approached her after Elias’s hospital incident.
He wanted the papers back.
Rebecca refused.
The man threatened her children.
Then Rebecca spoke his name.
Not Pike.
Not Emilio.
“Victor Baron.”
Elias’s father.
Elias went completely still.
For years he had believed his father’s enemies had followed him that day.
Rebecca’s recording revealed something else.
Victor’s own men had been following Elias.
His father had suspected the boy’s mother was planning to leave him and had ordered surveillance.
Rebecca had saved Elias from the very family Elias later inherited.
Then the tape ended with an even more dangerous secret.
Rebecca whispered:
“If anything happens to me, Teresa knows where the original ledger is.”
Karen slowly turned toward Teresa.

Teresa’s eyes filled with tears.
Because for twenty-two years, she had been hiding the one document capable of destroying the Baron family.
