Chapter 4 - THE MAN WHO CAME BACK WITH A DIFFERENT NAME

Connor Blake looked exactly the same.

That was the cruelest part.

Norah had imagined him older.

Harder.

Maybe visibly ruined by whatever kind of life allowed a man to destroy someone who trusted him.

Instead, he stood in the Vale Meridian lobby wearing a navy suit and an expensive watch.

Clean-shaven.

Confident.

Smiling.

“Norah.”

Her body remembered him before her mind did.

Her hands went cold.

Her breathing shortened.

Connor’s smile widened.

“You look good.”

Ethan stepped between them.

Connor glanced at him.

“Mr. Vale.”

“Your badge says Caleb Brooks.”

Connor shrugged.

“Professional reinvention.”

“You mean fraud.”

“Strong word.”

Norah finally found her voice.

“You left me with eighty thousand dollars in debt.”

Connor looked almost offended.

“You signed those accounts.”

“Some of them.”

“See? Memory improves when properly motivated.”

Ethan moved one step closer.

“You’re going to answer questions.”

Connor laughed quietly.

“You really should be asking her questions.”

Norah froze.

Connor turned toward Ethan.

“Did she tell you how interested she was in your companies before Evelyn died?”

“That’s a lie.”

“Is it?”

Connor removed his phone.

He showed Ethan an old email.

The sender appeared to be Norah.

The message discussed Vale Meridian vendor accounts.

Norah stared at it.

“I never wrote that.”

Connor smiled.

“Of course you didn’t.”

Something in his tone told her he was enjoying this.

Security approached.

Connor raised both hands.

“I’m leaving voluntarily.”

Before walking away, he leaned close enough for Norah to hear.

“You always were terrible at knowing when to stay quiet.”

Ethan’s face darkened.

Connor looked at him.

“And you were terrible at knowing who your wife trusted.”

Security escorted him out.

Norah turned on Ethan.

“You believe me?”

“Yes.”

She wasn’t prepared for the answer.

“Why?”

“Because liars usually spend more time defending themselves.”

He led her upstairs.

Inside his private office, Ethan unlocked a safe.

He removed a phone sealed inside an evidence bag.

“Evelyn’s old phone.”

“You kept it?”

“I kept everything.”

His voice lost its edge.

“She died three years ago. I still haven’t thrown away her toothbrush.”

Norah looked at him differently after that.

Not as the Viper.

As a man whose grief had hardened around him until people mistook armor for cruelty.

Ethan powered on the phone.

“There’s a voicemail I never understood.”

He pressed play.

Evelyn’s voice filled the room.

Quiet.

Urgent.

“Ethan, if you get this and I haven’t explained everything, look into Connor Blake. Don’t confront Grant until you understand the accounts.”

Norah stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

“And find Norah Bell. She’s not part of it. She’s one of the victims.”

Ethan stared at the phone.

Norah felt tears sting her eyes.

Then Evelyn said one final sentence.

May you like

A sentence that changed the entire room.

“If something happens to me, the crash won’t be an accident.”
