Chapter 12 - THE SECRET HER FATHER TOOK TO HIS GRAVE

Norah’s father had been dead for eight years.
She had believed she knew everything about him.
She was wrong.
His full name was Thomas Bell.
Before becoming a teacher, Thomas had spent nine years working as a junior accountant at a small logistics company.
A company Vale Meridian later acquired.
Priya found his personnel records buried in old archives.
Thomas had resigned suddenly.
No explanation.
No exit interview.
Nothing.
Then they found a letter.
Thomas Bell had reported suspicious vendor payments fifteen years earlier.
The complaint was assigned to a young finance executive.
Grant Mercer.
Norah stared at the screen.
“My dad knew.”
Ethan sat beside her.
“He suspected.”
“Why didn’t he tell anyone?”
“He did.”
The company had closed the complaint.
Three weeks later, Thomas resigned.
Years passed.
Then Connor met Norah.
Not accidentally.
Investigators uncovered messages showing that Connor had originally approached Norah because Grant wanted to know whether Thomas Bell had kept copies of his old records.
Norah felt sick.
“My entire relationship…”
Ethan’s voice was quiet.
“It began because Grant was afraid of your father.”
She stood so quickly the chair tipped backward.
“Connor dated me for three years.”
“I know.”
“He proposed.”
“I know.”
“He knew my mother. He came to Christmas dinner. He helped carry my father’s casket.”
Her voice broke.
Ethan reached for her.
Norah stepped away.
Not because she didn’t want comfort.
Because she needed one moment where nobody touched her.
One moment where the truth belonged only to her.
Then Emma arrived carrying an old cardboard box.
“I think I know what they wanted.”
Their mother had found it in storage after Norah called.
Inside were Thomas Bell’s old work papers.
Most were ordinary.
Tax forms.
Training manuals.
Pay stubs.
But hidden inside a folder labeled SCHOOL RECEIPTS was a handwritten ledger.
Thomas had copied payments.
Company names.
Dates.
Dollar amounts.
Grant Mercer’s initials appeared again and again.
At the back was a note addressed to his daughters.
Norah and Emma, if you ever find this, I hope none of it matters anymore.
Norah’s eyes filled.
I left because powerful men were stealing and I became afraid that proving it would put our family in danger.
The final sentence nearly broke her.
Being afraid was not my proudest moment. Keeping you safe was.
Ethan stood beside her silently.
Norah closed the ledger.
“This ends now.”
Within hours, investigators had enough corroborating evidence to expand the case against Grant.
But Grant had vanished.
His apartment was empty.
His passport had not been used.
His accounts were frozen.
Then Sophie called.
Norah answered.
“Hi, sweetheart.”
“Norah?”
Sophie sounded confused.
“There’s a man downstairs.”
Norah’s blood went cold.
“What man?”
“He says he’s Grandpa Thomas’s friend.”
Thomas Bell had been dead eight years.
Sophie continued.
“He says he has something that belongs to you.”
Then Ethan grabbed the phone.
“Do not go downstairs.”
A message appeared on Norah’s screen.
A photograph of Grant Mercer standing in the lobby.
In his hand was a sealed envelope.
