Chapter 3 - THE SECRET CHARLIE COULDN'T TELL HIS FATHER

The restaurant fell into a silence so complete that Audrey could hear the refrigerator humming behind the bar.
Maxwell crouched in front of his son.
"Charlie."
His voice broke.
"Are you telling me you saw your mother after the accident?"
Charlie watched his lips carefully.
Then he shook his head.
Audrey gently touched Maxwell's sleeve.
"Let me interpret for both of you."
Maxwell stared at her.
"Please."
It was the first time that evening he had used that word.
Audrey signed his question.
Charlie lowered his eyes.
Then his hands began moving.
Slowly.
Carefully.
He explained that on the morning of the supposed accident, he had seen his mother arguing with Adrian Cross inside the family's private boathouse.
Olivia had been crying.
Adrian had grabbed her arm.
Another man had been waiting beside a black SUV.
Charlie remembered his mother turning toward him.
She signed something.
Something he had never forgotten.
"RUN TO DADDY."
But before Charlie could reach the house, a woman in a blue uniform stopped him.
She told him his mother had gone away.
Hours later, everyone announced that Olivia had died at sea.
Maxwell sat perfectly still.
"Why didn't he tell me?"
Audrey studied Charlie's answer.
Then she looked at Maxwell with painful understanding.
"He tried."
Maxwell closed his eyes.
Audrey continued.
"He says he signed it to you after the funeral."
Maxwell remembered.
His son had been crying and moving his hands desperately.
Maxwell had assumed Charlie was asking when his mother would come home.
He had hugged him.
Promised everything would be okay.
But he had never understood the warning.
At the time, Maxwell knew only basic signs.
He had depended on Olivia to interpret most conversations with Charlie.
After her disappearance, that bridge had vanished.
Now the truth stood in front of him.
His son had been trying to expose a crime for eighteen months.
And nobody had listened.
Maxwell reached for Charlie's hand.
"I'm sorry."
Audrey interpreted.
Charlie began crying.
Then he signed something else.
Audrey froze.
"What is it?" Maxwell asked.
She looked toward Victor Hale.
"Charlie says the woman who stopped him at the boathouse works here."
Maxwell slowly stood.
"Which woman?"
Charlie pointed directly toward the restaurant manager.

And signed:
"THE WOMAN IS HIS WIFE."
