Chapter 14 - THE BEAR THAT HELD THE TRUTH

Charlie had carried the same stuffed bear since he was three.
Its name was Captain.
Brown fur.
One missing button eye.
A blue ribbon tied around its neck.
Audrey had seen him holding it earlier that evening.
Now she understood why Olivia had insisted that nobody throw it away.
Inside a secure room, Maxwell carefully examined the toy while Charlie watched.
The boy looked worried.
Audrey signed:
"WE NEED TO CHECK SOMETHING INSIDE CAPTAIN. IS THAT OKAY?"
Charlie hesitated.
Then nodded.
Maxwell gently opened a small seam beneath the bear's blue ribbon.
Inside was a tiny waterproof pouch.
He removed it.
A memory card slipped into his palm.
For eighteen months, the evidence had been hidden in the one place Adrian never thought to search.
A child's favorite toy.
Investigators examined the card.
It contained financial records, recorded conversations, and documents connecting Adrian, Raymond, Marianne, and several business associates to a complex medical billing fraud scheme.
The evidence supported Olivia's accusations.
It also revealed why Adrian had been so desperate to control Maxwell's companies.
He had been using them without Maxwell's knowledge.
Olivia had quietly collected proof.
Amanda had helped her preserve it.
And Charlie had unknowingly protected the final copy.
Within hours, investigators located Adrian's private aircraft before departure.
He was arrested attempting to board.
The money transfers were frozen.
Several associates were taken into custody.
The investigation would continue for months.
But the immediate danger was over.
That evening, Maxwell brought Charlie to the hospital.
Audrey came with them.
When Olivia saw her son standing in the doorway, she covered her mouth.
Charlie froze.
For eighteen months, he had dreamed of this moment.
Now that it had arrived, he couldn't move.
Olivia slowly raised her hands.
She signed:
"MY BEAUTIFUL BOY."
Charlie's face crumpled.
He ran into her arms.
Olivia held him tightly.
Both were crying.
Maxwell turned away, overwhelmed.
Audrey gently touched his arm.
"Go to them."
He hesitated.
Then approached the bed.
Olivia looked up at him.
"Max."
He knelt beside her.
"I'm sorry I didn't understand Charlie."
Olivia touched his face.
"You can learn."
Maxwell nodded.
"I will."
Then Charlie stepped back.
He signed something to both parents.
Audrey translated.
"HE SAYS WE CAN BE A FAMILY AGAIN."
Olivia began crying harder.
Maxwell wrapped his arms around them.
For the first time in eighteen months, the Gallow family was together.
But just as Audrey prepared to leave, Olivia called her name.
"Audrey."
She turned.
Olivia reached beneath her pillow.
And handed Audrey a sealed envelope.
"I was supposed to give you this two years ago."
Audrey opened it.
Inside was a letter from a university nursing program.
And a scholarship approval bearing her full name.
The award amount covered every remaining semester of her education.
Audrey stared at it.

Then Olivia said softly:
"Your sister nominated you before I disappeared."
