Chapter 8 - THE LETTER VINCENT NEVER READ

The envelope still existed.
That was the astonishing part.
Someone had archived it instead of destroying it.
The seal had been broken.
The letter inside had never reached Vincent.
He read it standing beside the window.
Vincent,
Claire has not asked me to contact you. I am doing this because I believe there are truths neither of you possesses.
She is pregnant.
The child is yours.
She believes you chose another family. I do not know whether that belief is correct, but if there is any chance it is not, you deserve to know your son or daughter exists.
Do not come here unless you are prepared to respect Claire’s decisions.
Do not use money, fear, or your name to force yourself into her life.
But do not claim later that nobody gave you the truth.
Daniel Bennett.
Vincent reached the bottom.
Then read it again.
He sat down.
For eighteen years, I had imagined this moment differently.
I expected anger.
Blame.
Maybe accusations about why I hadn’t tried harder.
Instead, Vincent covered his face.
“I would have come.”
My eyes burned.
“I know.”
That was the hardest admission I had made all week.
Maybe I had always known.
Maybe that was why I never investigated whether my calls or letters reached him.
It had been easier to believe he had rejected us than risk learning I had misunderstood everything.
Noah took the letter from Vincent.
“This man knew Mom for how long?”
“Since we were kids,” I said.
“And he still wrote that you deserved to know.”
“Yes.”
Noah looked at Vincent.
“You should probably be grateful.”
“I am.”
Vincent’s voice broke.
“I’m more grateful than I know how to explain.”
Meanwhile, investigators traced the stolen support payments.
Sophia had not kept all the money personally.
Most had been moved into investment accounts under Ethan’s name.
Ethan stared at the records in horror.
“I never knew.”
Vincent put a hand on his shoulder.
“I know.”
“I don’t want it.”
“I know.”
The pattern was undeniable.
Sophia had spent eighteen years trying to secure Ethan’s future by stealing mine and Noah’s.
But then the accountant found something stranger.
The first transfer had been redirected before Noah was born.
Before Sophia could have known whether my baby was a boy or girl.
Which meant the trust clause wasn’t her original reason.
There had been another motive.
We found it in an old email Sophia sent herself eighteen years earlier.
One sentence:
IF CLAIRE EVER SPEAKS TO VINCENT DIRECTLY, EVERYTHING FALLS APART.
Sophia hadn’t only been protecting Ethan’s inheritance.

She had been terrified Vincent and I would compare our versions of what happened.
Because the affair that destroyed our marriage had never happened at all.
