Chapter 10 - THE SON WHO REFUSED TO BE BOUGHT

Noah read Carlo’s threat twice.

Then deleted it.

“That’s your response?” Vincent asked.

“No.”

Noah opened his laptop.

“My response is better.”

Within twenty minutes, he had written a public statement.

He didn’t deny Vincent was his biological father.

He didn’t defend the Moretti name.

He didn’t apologize for existing.

My son wrote:

I earned my academic record before I knew Vincent Moretti was my father. I did not inherit my grades, my admission, or my work. Questions about Mr. Moretti’s businesses should be directed to Mr. Moretti, not to an eighteen-year-old student who learned his own family history this week.

Vincent read it.

“Mr. Moretti?”

Noah looked at him.

“You’re still auditioning.”

Ethan laughed.

Vincent actually accepted that.

Then Noah added one sentence:

Any assets transferred to me through the Moretti trust will remain untouched until their legal origins are independently reviewed.

That sentence detonated across Chicago.

Moretti executives panicked.

Attorneys called.

Board members demanded meetings.

Vincent did something no one expected.

He supported Noah publicly.

“My son has the right to know where every dollar came from.”

I watched him say it to reporters.

Then he went further.

He commissioned an independent audit of his entire business network.

Legitimate holdings.

Shell companies.

Old partnerships.

Everything.

Carlo called him within minutes.

“You’re destroying us.”

Vincent’s voice was calm.

“I’m finding out whether there’s an ‘us’ worth preserving.”

The audit uncovered illegal operations Vincent had already begun dismantling years earlier.

But it also found accounts he had never authorized.

Carlo had been using Moretti shipping subsidiaries for weapons trafficking and political bribery.

Sophia knew some of it.

That was why Carlo had helped her intercept communications years earlier.

They had protected each other.

Sophia kept Noah invisible.

Carlo kept Ethan positioned as the future heir he believed he could control.

Then Ethan made his own choice.

He signed away every claim he had to the disputed trust.

Sophia screamed when she learned.

“You threw away your future!”

Ethan stared at her.

“No.”

His voice shook.

“I stopped letting you build my future out of someone else’s stolen life.”

He walked out.

Noah followed him.

Two boys who should have hated each other chose each other instead.

Hours later, federal investigators arrived at Vincent’s Chicago headquarters.

Carlo was arrested.

But before being taken away, he laughed.

“You think Sophia did all of this for Ethan?”

Vincent stared at him.

Carlo smiled.

“She was protecting herself.”

Then he revealed the secret Sophia had kept longer than any other.

Luca Moretti’s car crash—the accident that killed Ethan’s biological father—had not been an accident.

And Sophia had been in the car minutes before it happened.
