Chapter 12 - THE CONFESSION THAT EXPOSED EVERYTHING

The recording changed the investigation overnight.
Gabriel Alvarez had confronted Vincent Cole about the missing medical equipment and concealed ownership records.
He had threatened to expose the operation.
Three days later, he died.
Now investigators had evidence that his death might be connected to the fraud.
Clara listened to the recording once.
Then asked for it to be turned off.
"I can't hear his voice like that again."
I nodded.
The investigator carefully secured the device.
Clara stood beside the window.
For a long time, she said nothing.
Then she whispered, "He knew."
I looked at her.
"What?"
"Gabriel knew someone was threatening him."
Her voice broke.
"He came home that week and hugged Sophie for almost an hour."
Tears streamed down her cheeks.
"I thought he was just tired."
I didn't know what to say.
Clara turned toward me.
"Mr. Moretti, I spent five years telling myself his death was an accident."
I nodded.
"I know."
"Now I find out he was trying to protect us."
Her expression hardened.
"I want justice."
I met her eyes.
"So do I."
The next morning, investigators moved to secure several properties connected to Vincent.
Financial accounts were frozen.
Employees were interviewed.
Records were preserved.
Then a major breakthrough came from an unexpected source.
Isabella Cole.
Vincent's sister.
The woman who had recruited Clara into the estate.
She contacted investigators through an attorney and offered to cooperate.
According to her statement, Vincent had used Clara's identity to conceal financial transactions and had pressured Isabella to arrange her employment.
Isabella admitted helping him.
But she also provided records showing how Vincent had manipulated the security systems before the birthday celebration.
The most important evidence was a video recording from his private office.
In it, Vincent discussed the black box with an unidentified associate.
He described a plan to create a violent incident at the celebration and place blame on Dante Moretti.
The recording didn't show every detail.
But it established that the package wasn't an innocent gift.
And it showed Vincent had been preparing the scheme for months.
Then Isabella revealed something else.
"Vincent has an escape plan."
The investigator leaned forward.
"Where?"
"A private airstrip outside Rockford."
"When?"
"Tomorrow morning."
The authorities coordinated an operation.
I was told to remain at the estate.
For once, I listened.
That evening, Sophie visited with Clara.
She wore a yellow sweater and carried a stuffed rabbit.
When she saw me, she smiled.
"Uncle Dante!"
I knelt.
"Hello, sweetheart."
She wrapped her arms around my neck.
I hugged her gently.
Then she looked at me seriously.
"Did the bad man go away?"
I swallowed.
"People are working very hard to make sure he can't hurt anyone."
She considered that.
"Good."
Then she reached into her pocket.
A small blue ribbon appeared.
"My lucky ribbon."
I smiled.
"I remember."
She held it out.
"You can keep it."
I stared.
"Are you sure?"
She nodded.
"So you don't forget to be careful."
Something tightened in my chest.
I took the ribbon.
"Thank you."
She smiled.
Then whispered, "Mama says brave people can still get scared."
I looked toward Clara.
She stood near the doorway.
Her eyes glistened.
"Your mama is very smart."
Sophie nodded proudly.
"I know."
Later that night, investigators called.
Vincent's escape aircraft had been located.
But when officers approached the hangar, they found it empty.
Vincent had disappeared.
And on the hangar office desk lay a photograph.
It showed my father, Salvatore Moretti, standing beside Vincent.

On the back was a handwritten message.
ASK DANTE WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO SALVATORE.
