Chapter 11 - THE BROTHER WHO NEVER STOPPED FIGHTING

Luca arrived at the estate just after midnight.

He wore a dark coat and carried a worn leather bag.

For eleven years, I had imagined this moment.

Sometimes I dreamed he would walk through the front door laughing.

Sometimes I imagined finding him in a crowded street.

Sometimes I woke believing I'd heard his voice.

But nothing prepared me for seeing him standing beneath the same chandelier where I'd nearly opened the black box.

"Dante."

My throat tightened.

"Luca."

He smiled sadly.

"Hey, big brother."

I crossed the room.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Then I pulled him into my arms.

He hugged me tightly.

Neither of us spoke.

Eleven years.

Eleven Christmases.

Eleven birthdays.

Eleven years of grief.

And now he was here.

Alive.

When I finally stepped back, tears blurred my vision.

"You idiot."

He laughed shakily.

"I know."

"You let me bury you."

His smile vanished.

"I'm sorry."

I looked at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Vincent threatened you."

I shook my head.

"We could've fought him together."

Luca looked exhausted.

"Not then. He controlled too many people. I had no proof anyone would believe."

My mother entered the room.

The moment Luca saw her, his face crumpled.

"Mom."

She hurried toward him.

"My baby."

They embraced.

I turned away.

For once, I didn't care who saw tears in my eyes.

Later, we gathered in my study.

Luca explained everything.

He had discovered Silver Harbor's illegal transactions shortly before the explosion.

Vincent arranged the attack.

Marcus helped Luca escape.

Our father discovered the truth but couldn't expose Vincent without risking everyone involved.

Gabriel Alvarez later helped Luca recover records.

Then Gabriel died.

Luca believed Vincent had arranged the industrial accident, but investigators needed more evidence to establish exactly what happened.

"Why target Sophie?" I asked.

Luca looked toward the recovered trust documents.

"Because Vincent needs her ownership rights."

I frowned.

"She's five."

"Exactly."

Luca explained that control of Sophie's trust depended on court-supervised guardianship and legal protections.

Vincent had attempted to create false financial records suggesting Clara was unsuitable to manage her daughter's interests.

The three-million-dollar account opened under Clara's identity was part of that scheme.

I felt sick.

"He wanted to frame her for financial misconduct."

Luca nodded.

"Then use that accusation to influence the trust administration."

Clara stood near the doorway.

She had insisted on being present.

Her face was pale.

"You're saying someone planned to take my daughter?"

Luca looked at her.

"That's what the evidence suggests."

Clara gripped the back of a chair.

"No."

I stepped closer.

"Clara, the investigators have the records. We'll make sure the truth is documented."

She looked at me.

"Don't promise what you can't control."

I stopped.

She was right.

I took a breath.

"Then I promise I'll tell the truth and cooperate with everyone protecting Sophie."

Clara nodded slowly.

That answer seemed to matter.

Then Luca opened his leather bag.

Inside was a small recording device.

"There's one more thing."

I frowned.

"What?"

"Gabriel recorded a conversation with Vincent three days before he died."

Clara covered her mouth.

Luca placed the device on the desk.

The recording began.

Gabriel's voice filled the room.

"I know what you've done with the shipments."

Then Vincent answered.

"You should have stayed out of family business."

Gabriel sounded angry.

"My daughter deserves better than this."

Vincent laughed.

"Your daughter won't remember you."

Clara began crying.

Then Gabriel said something that made everyone freeze.

"If anything happens to me, Dante Moretti gets everything."

I stared.

My name.

Gabriel had named me.

May you like

And Vincent's answer was chilling.

"Then I'll make sure Dante never hears a word."
