Chapter 8 - THE SECOND SECRET INSIDE THE RECIPE BOOK

Security brought the red recipe book back.
Maria examined every page.
Nothing.
Flour stains.
Soup recipes.
Christmas tamales.
Her mother’s handwriting.
Then Sophie climbed onto the chair.
“Mommy, why broken?”
Maria turned.
“What?”
Sophie pointed at the back cover.
The fabric was torn where Maria had removed the photograph.
“No, baby. That’s where Grandma hid something.”
Sophie frowned.
Then flipped the book over.
A small cardboard ridge showed near the spine.
Dmitri reached for it.
Maria slapped his hand away.
“My book.”
He actually apologized.
She worked the cardboard loose herself.
Inside was a tiny brass key.
No label.
Alexei immediately said:
“Safe-deposit box.”
Maria looked at him.
“Or a diary.”
“It is shaped like a bank key.”
Fine.
He had rich-person key knowledge.
They searched Lucia’s old records.
A closed bank account in Cicero.
Then a safe-deposit rental.
Box 318.
Still active.
How?
Automatic annual payment from a savings account containing just enough money to cover fees.
Lucia had planned for the box to survive her.
Legal access required estate procedures.
No breaking into banks.
No mafia shortcuts.
Alexei agreed reluctantly to “no mafia shortcuts,” as Maria described it.
Three days later, with proper documentation, the box opened.
Inside:
A rosary.
Two birth certificates.
Rafael’s wedding ring.
Letters.
And a small black ledger.
Maria’s hands shook.
Pages documented freight dates, container numbers, payments, and initials.
V.S.
M.P.
S.P.
Viktor.
Mikhail.
Sergei.
The ledger did not automatically explain crimes.
Investigators would need context.
But it established that Rafael had been tracking shipments.
Then one entry stood out.
OCT 14 — V.S. CHANGED MANIFEST AFTER R.A. SIGNOFF.
Rafael had documented the forgery in real time.
Then:
OCT 19 — M.P. AGREES R.A. MUST LEAVE. CHILDREN THREATENED.
Maria covered her mouth.
Her father had not simply vanished.
The danger had been written down.
Then the final pages switched handwriting.
Lucia’s.
Years later.
VIKTOR CAME BACK.
Maria froze.
Date:
Eight years earlier.
Viktor visited Lucia before she died.
Why?
Looking for the ledger.
She lied.
Said Rafael destroyed it.
Then Lucia wrote:
He asked about Maria.
My blood went cold.
Next:
I told him she moved west.
She had not.
At the time Maria lived in Chicago.
Lucia intentionally misdirected him.
Then one final line:
If he ever finds Maria, Petrov owes her protection.
Maria looked at Alexei.
He read it too.
Neither spoke.
Then Dmitri turned another page.
A name appeared.
ELENA M.
The house manager.
Lucia had met Elena Markovic.
Date:
Eight years earlier.
Why?
May you like
Elena had helped Lucia hide from Viktor.
The woman now working inside Alexei’s estate had known Maria’s mother long before Maria was hired there.
