Chapter 1 - THE THING SOPHIE SAW FIRST

“His mouth.”

Maria froze.

“What?”

Sophie pointed at Alexei Petrov’s face.

“Mommy, his mouth is getting big.”

Dmitri looked down.

Then his expression changed.

Alexei’s lower lip was swelling.

So was the skin around his eyes.

A red rash had begun crawling above his collar.

Maria’s heart slammed against her ribs.

She knew those signs.

Not because she was a doctor.

Because Sophie had a severe cashew allergy.

Two years earlier, her daughter had eaten half a cookie at daycare and developed the same frightening combination of swelling, wheezing, and pale skin.

Maria dropped beside Alexei.

“Does he have allergies?”

Dmitri looked at the guards.

Nobody answered.

Sophie tugged her mother’s sleeve.

“Yellow medicine.”

Maria turned.

The child meant her epinephrine auto-injector.

“No, sweetheart. Yours is for you.”

Then Dmitri suddenly stood.

“His desk.”

He yanked open the bottom drawer.

Nothing.

Second drawer.

Documents.

Third—

A black medical pouch.

Dmitri ripped it open.

Inside was an epinephrine injector with Alexei Petrov’s name printed on the pharmacy label.

“Nut allergy,” Dmitri said.

Maria stared.

“You knew?”

“He hasn’t had a reaction in years.”

The emergency dispatcher, still on speaker, instructed them through the next steps.

Dmitri administered the prescribed injector.

One guard timed it.

Another unlocked the gates for paramedics.

Maria pulled Sophie back.

The little girl crouched beside the wall, staring at Alexei with enormous brown eyes.

“Is he still scared?”

Maria’s throat tightened.

“Probably.”

Sophie nodded seriously.

“Doctors get scared too.”

No one corrected her.

Alexei’s breathing remained strained, but within minutes the ambulance crew arrived and took over.

As they lifted him onto the stretcher, his eyes opened briefly.

Confused.

He looked first at Dmitri.

Then Maria.

Then Sophie.

The child raised her plastic stethoscope.

“You’re okay. I found it.”

His eyes closed again.

The ambulance doors slammed.

For the next hour, the Petrov estate became chaos.

Security locked down the kitchen.

Staff were questioned.

Coffee cups collected.

Food removed.

Nobody left.

Maria sat in the staff room with Sophie on her lap.

She assumed the problem had been breakfast.

Cross-contamination.

A careless cook.

Maybe someone had used almond milk.

Then Dmitri entered.

He looked worse than he had beside Alexei.

“Maria.”

She stood.

“Is he alive?”

“Yes.”

Her knees nearly gave out.

“He’s stable. They’re keeping him for observation.”

“Thank God.”

Dmitri did not relax.

Instead, he placed a clear evidence bag on the table.

Inside was the paper sleeve from Alexei’s morning coffee.

Maria recognized the handwriting.

ALEXEI — BLACK, NO SUGAR.

Then Dmitri turned it over.

Taped beneath the cardboard seam was a tiny torn packet.

CASHEW PROTEIN POWDER.

Maria stared.

“That wasn’t an accident.”

“No.”

“Who made his coffee?”

Dmitri’s jaw hardened.

“That is the problem.”

The kitchen staff had not.

May you like

The coffee had been delivered from outside the estate.

And the order had been placed using Maria’s employee account.
