Chapter 2 - THE BRIDE WHO NEVER LEFT WILLINGLY

Victor Kane was standing outside the mansion when Michael called him.
That was the first thing that bothered him.
His head of security should have been coordinating the departure of three hundred wedding guests, yet according to the estate's security system, Victor had signed out twenty minutes earlier.
Michael called again.
Straight to voicemail.
He contacted Walter.
“Lock down the security office. Nobody deletes anything. Nobody removes a computer.”
Walter's voice sharpened.
“Sir, has something happened?”
“I believe Claire was taken from the estate.”
There was a long silence.
Then Walter whispered, “Dear God.”
Michael looked toward Lily.
She was sitting quietly with her hands folded in her lap.
He softened his voice.
“Lily, I need you to find your mother and stay with her.”
“Did I do something bad?”
“No.”
He moved closer.
“You did something very brave. You told me the truth.”
She nodded, but her eyes filled with worry.
“Are you going to find Miss Claire?”
“Yes.”
“Promise?”
Michael hesitated.
He had spent years making promises with the confidence of a man who could command almost anything.
Now he understood how little that confidence meant.
“I promise I'll do everything I can.”
Ten minutes later, Walter brought the security recordings into Michael's study.
The cameras showed Claire entering her bridal suite at 10:31 a.m.
At 10:43, Victor appeared in the hallway.
Then the recording went black.
Eleven minutes were missing.
When the footage resumed, the hallway was empty.
Walter looked sick.
“Victor ordered a temporary system reset.”
“Why?”
“He said there was an attempted security breach.”
“And you believed him?”
“Yes, sir.”
Michael stared at the screen.
For two years, he had trusted Victor more than almost anyone.
Victor had been there after the ambush.
He had personally overseen Michael's security during rehabilitation.
He had even helped arrange special transportation for the wedding.
Now Michael remembered Victor's expression when Walter delivered Claire's letter.
Not surprised.
Not concerned.
Almost relieved.
“Get me Victor's financial records,” Michael ordered.
Walter nodded.
“And contact the authorities,” Michael added. “Tell them what Lily witnessed and preserve every recording.”
Walter stopped.
“Sir?”
“You heard me.”
For years, Michael Bennett had operated in a world where powerful men handled betrayals privately.
That world had already cost him the use of his legs.
He would not allow his missing bride to become another secret buried inside his organization.
An hour later, investigators found a discarded wedding bouquet in a service corridor.
Several white roses had been crushed.
A silk ribbon was torn.
Tucked beneath the ribbon was a small silver flash drive.
Claire had apparently hidden it before she was taken.
Michael asked an independent computer specialist to examine it safely.
The drive contained a single video.
Claire appeared in her bridal suite.
Her makeup was unfinished.
Her hands were shaking.
“If you're watching this, Michael, something has gone terribly wrong.”
He leaned toward the screen.
Claire swallowed.
“I found evidence connecting Victor to the men who attacked you two years ago.”
Michael stopped breathing.
Then she whispered:
“And I think Richard Fletcher knows exactly what happened.”
The screen went black.
Michael stared at his own reflection.

His bride had uncovered a secret involving the ambush that put him in a wheelchair.
And the man who smiled at his humiliation had known about it all along.
