Chapter 10 - THE DAY THE MAFIA BOSS REFUSED TO SURRENDER

Richard Fletcher expected Michael Bennett to arrive at the emergency foundation meeting looking defeated.
Instead, Michael entered the boardroom with his attorney, an independent auditor, and Claire.
There were no armed bodyguards beside him.
No threats.
No dramatic display of power.
He simply rolled to his place at the table and opened a folder.
Richard smiled.
“Michael. I hope you're feeling better.”
“I'm feeling well enough to understand the agenda.”
A few trustees exchanged uncomfortable glances.
Richard leaned back.
“Today's meeting concerns the foundation's future. Several members have expressed concern that your personal difficulties may be interfering with your judgment.”
Michael looked directly at him.
“My personal difficulties?”
Richard gestured vaguely toward the wheelchair.
“The attack, your recovery, and now the unfortunate wedding situation.”
The implication was obvious.
Michael's disability had become part of Richard's argument that he should surrender control.
Claire spoke before Michael could answer.
“A spinal cord injury does not establish an inability to manage an organization.”
Richard's expression hardened.
“This is a private board meeting.”
“And I'm here as counsel for the affected parties.”
Claire placed her authorization on the table.
Michael watched her with a mixture of gratitude and shame.
For two years, he had been determined to prove he could manage every challenge alone.
Now he understood the difference between accepting help and surrendering independence.
Richard turned toward the trustees.
“The foundation cannot afford uncertainty.”
Michael nodded.
“Then let's discuss the financial uncertainty created by Northpoint Protective Services.”
Richard stopped smiling.
The independent auditor presented the suspicious transactions.
Transfers.
False invoices.
Payments routed through shell companies.
Records connected to the forged accounts in Grace and Lily Harper's names.
Then Nora introduced the evidence concerning Victor's security arrangements.
The eleven missing minutes of wedding footage.
The forced removal of Claire from the estate.
The document created on Victor's computer containing the cruel letter.
Richard's attorney immediately objected to several conclusions, and Michael did not pretend every allegation had already been proven.
He simply made the evidence available to the appropriate investigators.
Then he turned to the trustees.
“I approved Northpoint as a contractor. I failed to examine warnings that deserved my attention. That responsibility belongs to me.”
The room became completely silent.
Michael continued.
“But my injury does not make me incompetent, and my mistakes do not entitle another person to steal from this foundation.”
Richard stood.
“This is an outrageous attempt to blame me for your own failures.”
Michael looked at him.
“Then an independent investigation should clear your name.”
Richard said nothing.
By the end of the meeting, the trustees had suspended the disputed contracts, appointed independent financial oversight, and rejected Richard's attempt to obtain emergency control.
The proceedings concerning Michael's alleged incapacity also lacked evidence and did not produce the result Richard wanted.
But the meeting wasn't the end of the conflict.
It was the beginning of Richard's exposure.
As the trustees filed out, Richard leaned close to Michael.
“You think the authorities are going to treat you like an innocent man?”
Michael held his gaze.
“No.”
That answer surprised Richard.
Michael continued.
“I know exactly what kind of life I lived before the ambush.”
Richard's expression changed.
For the first time, he seemed uncertain.
Then Michael added:
“The difference is that I'm finished hiding it.”
That evening, investigators sent Nora a copy of newly recovered warehouse security footage from the night Thomas Harper died.
The recording showed Victor entering the building shortly before the fire.
He carried a large container.
Thirty minutes later, he left through a rear service exit.
Thomas never came out.
The evidence still required investigation, but it provided a direct lead that had been missing for eighteen months.
And when Grace saw the timestamp, she recognized something else.
Thomas had called her four minutes before Victor entered.
She had saved the voicemail.
May you like
For eighteen months, she had been too heartbroken to listen to the entire message.
Now she finally pressed play.
