Chapter 3 - SOMEONE HAD TRIED TO KEEP ME OUT OF THE HOUSE

Sadi stared at the box.

“Open it.”

Desmond did not move.

“You open it.”

“It has my name.”

“Exactly.”

She swallowed.

Then lifted the lid.

Inside were copies of her nursing license.

College records.

Former addresses.

Credit report.

Eviction notices.

Her mother’s death certificate.

Her father’s employment history.

Everything.

Too much.

She looked at Desmond.

“You background-checked me?”

“I background-check everyone.”

“This says DO NOT HIRE.”

“I didn’t write it.”

“Who did?”

Desmond pulled out the recommendation sheet.

Security assessment.

Candidate:

Sadi Callaway.

Risk level:

Elevated.

Reason:

Family connection to historical Gallagher Logistics investigation.

His face went still.

“My family?”

She grabbed the page.

Her father’s name appeared.

MICHAEL CALLAWAY.

Occupation:

Diesel mechanic.

That part she knew.

Employer:

Gallagher Freight Maintenance Division.

That part she didn’t.

“What the hell?”

Desmond’s voice lowered.

“Your father worked for us.”

“No.”

“He did.”

Sadi shook her head.

“My dad worked municipal fleet.”

“Later.”

The report showed seven years with Gallagher Freight.

Then termination.

Then city employment.

Sadi stared at the reason.

INTERNAL SAFETY DISPUTE.

“What safety dispute?”

Desmond opened another archive drawer.

Old personnel files.

Nothing.

Michael Callaway’s original record had been removed.

Only the security reference remained.

Then Sadi found a handwritten note attached to her hiring file.

Patrick:

Do not bring this woman into the house.

D.G. does not need another Callaway near him.

No signature.

But the instruction was addressed to Patrick.

Meaning someone above or beside him had known.

“Did Patrick hire me?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

Desmond looked irritated.

“The agency sent you.”

“You approved me.”

“I approved whoever survived the interview.”

She stared at him.

“Comforting.”

Then they found something else.

An email printed six months earlier.

Three days after the bombing.

From Dr. Mercer to Patrick.

Subject:

CARE PLAN / EXPOSURE RISKS.

One line:

Avoid caregivers with family history connected to 2011 fleet inquiry.

Sadi’s heart began pounding.

Her father died in 2013.

“What happened in 2011?”

Desmond looked through the archive index.

“Fleet explosion.”

Sadi froze.

“What?”

“Maintenance facility. One mechanic killed. Three injured.”

“My dad?”

“No.”

He survived.

But the event was buried under insurance litigation.

Sadi remembered something.

Her father’s burned forearm.

He always told her it happened working on a city bus.

Maybe not.

Then Desmond pulled another file.

Gallagher Freight Safety Inquiry.

Signed by:

Michael Callaway.

Her father had reported that several armored vehicles were being serviced with unauthorized electronic ignition modules.

Devices capable of remote access.

Desmond looked at her.

Sadi looked at him.

Car bomb.

Six months earlier.

Remote detonation.

Her father had warned Gallagher Freight about compromised vehicle electronics fourteen years ago.

Then Sadi found a photograph clipped to the file.

Michael Callaway stood beside another mechanic.

Younger.

Clean-shaven.

Sadi recognized him.

Not personally.

From this house.

Frankie.

The security man who patted her down on her first day.

Sadi whispered:

“Frankie knew my father.”

Desmond’s expression hardened.

“And never said a word.”

Then the archive door slammed behind them.

The electronic lock clicked.

Sadi spun.

No handle movement.

Desmond tried the control panel.

Dead.

May you like

Someone had locked them inside.

Then smoke began sliding under the door.
