Chapter 13 - THE DOCK WHERE BOTH FAMILIES BROKE

Patrick was alone when they found him.
No hostage scene.
No gunfight.
He sat inside the old maintenance bay where rust marks still scarred the floor from the 2011 blast.
Police and attorneys were already present.
Patrick had called them himself.
He was surrendering records.
Desmond entered last.
Sadi stayed near the doorway.
Not because she feared the brothers.
Because some conversations deserved distance.
Patrick looked at Desmond’s wheelchair.
“I’m sorry.”
Desmond said nothing.
Patrick continued.
“I wanted control.”
“Obviously.”
“I did not want this.”
He looked at Desmond’s legs.
“That doesn’t matter.”
“No.”
Good.
Patrick handed over his laptop.
Emails with Graham Vale.
Mercer.
Malcolm.
Not all conspiracy.
Some ordinary business.
Some damning.
Patrick had arranged the AEGIS demonstration.
Mercer handled technical coordination.
Graham provided engineers.
Then someone changed parameters after Patrick’s last approval.
Cyber records identified the engineer account.
Dr. Mercer.
But Mercer used a Meridian master key provided by Graham Vale.
Both knew.
Patrick did not know the command had become lethal.
Would prosecutors believe him?
Evidence would decide.
Then Patrick admitted the aftermath.
When Desmond survived, Mercer suggested temporary sedation.
Patrick agreed initially because Desmond was violent, sleep-deprived, refusing treatment.
That might have been defensible medically.
Then doses changed.
Cognition worsened.
Patrick saw advantage.
Did nothing.
That was the betrayal.
Not planting the bomb.
Choosing power afterward.
Desmond asked:
“Did you forge my signature?”
Patrick looked down.
“Yes.”
“Capacity delegation?”
“Yes.”
“Resignation video?”
“No.”
“Medication?”
“I knew about stronger sedation. Not the substituted pills.”
“Meridian purchase?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Patrick laughed bitterly.
“Because I spent my whole life watching Dad hand you everything.”
Desmond’s face changed.
Patrick continued.
“You got the empire.”
“The men.”
“The votes.”
“The name.”
“I got clean companies and instructions to support you.”
“You think I wanted this?”
“No.”
Patrick looked at the chair.
“I know that now.”
Silence.
Then Sadi noticed a framed safety notice on the old wall.
Signed:
Michael Callaway.
Her father’s handwriting.
She walked toward it.
At the bottom, beneath faded ink:
REMOTE OVERRIDE TESTING REQUIRES DUAL AUTHORIZATION.
The original safety protocol.
Two independent approvals.
If Gallagher and Meridian had followed Michael’s rule, Patrick’s demonstration could never have been converted by one person.
Her father had designed the safeguard that could have prevented Desmond’s injury.
It had been removed from later AEGIS versions.
By whom?
Patrick checked old engineering records.
Seamus Gallagher.
Desmond’s father.
He considered dual authorization too slow for emergency deployments.
Again.
A dead man’s shortcut reaching into the future.
Desmond stared at the notice.
Then laughed once.
Not happily.
“Every road leads back to Dad.”
Sadi shook her head.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Some roads stop with you.”
That mattered.
Then police received word.
Mercer had been arrested crossing into Canada.
Graham Vale was detained on financial and cyber warrants pending investigation.
Malcolm’s role remained under review.
Patrick surrendered his corporate authority voluntarily.
The immediate threat was ending.
Then Mercer’s seized phone produced one final message.
Sent the night before.
To Graham:
CALLAWAY GIRL KNOWS ABOUT THE PILLS.
IF DESMOND TRUSTS HER, WE LOSE CONTROL.
Sadi read it.
Desmond did too.
Then a second message.
REMOVE HER FROM THE ESTATE.
No instruction to kill.
No violence.
Just fire her.
Discredit her.
Make sure Desmond was alone again.
For the first time, Sadi understood exactly why she had been dangerous.
Not because she had special skills.
May you like
Because she treated Desmond like a man capable of making his own decisions.
And everyone else’s plan required him to stop believing that.
