Chapter 9 - THE MAN SADIE HAD BURIED WAS ALIVE

Aaron looked directly into the photograph.

No mistake.

Same crooked nose.

Same scar beneath his left eye.

Same wedding band.

Sadie sat down on the concrete.

Her husband was alive.

For seven years she had told Poppy stories about a dead father.

She had slept beside folded uniforms.

Accepted military condolence paperwork.

Received survivor benefits.

Grieved.

And somewhere, Aaron had continued breathing.

“Where?” she asked.

Edwin answered through video.

“North Carolina.”

“Why?”

“Witness identity.”

Sadie stared.

“What?”

Night Falcon had uncovered weapons trafficking connected to private contractors, former Cain security, and military procurement.

Federal investigators extracted one survivor.

Aaron.

He became a protected cooperating witness.

Declan refused protection because he wanted to return for Evelyn.

Then disappeared separately.

“Why didn’t Aaron contact me?”

Edwin looked pained.

“He was told the trafficking network still had access to military personnel records.”

“So?”

“He believed contact would expose you.”

“That was seven years.”

“Yes.”

“That is not protection anymore.”

“No.”

Good.

Someone finally said it.

Sadie’s anger came stronger than joy.

Aaron had chosen for her.

Again.

Like Declan.

Like Evelyn.

Like Ronan.

Every man with power deciding silence was protection.

Then Ronan’s voice came through the police channel.

“They located Edwin.”

Claire looked alarmed.

Sadie stood.

“Where?”

Edwin answered himself.

“I’m bringing Poppy back.”

Twenty-five minutes later, a black sedan approached under police supervision.

Edwin stepped out first.

Hands visible.

Poppy ran.

Sadie dropped to her knees.

Her daughter hit her so hard both nearly fell.

“Mommy.”

Sadie buried her face in Poppy’s hair.

Alive.

Safe.

Everything else could wait.

Edwin surrendered the flash drive voluntarily.

No arrest yet.

Investigators questioned him.

Kidnapping remained serious even if Poppy had not been physically harmed.

Claire too.

Consequences.

Then the drive was opened.

Declan’s original file.

Hundreds of documents.

Night Falcon records.

Graham Marsh payments.

Cain shipping manifests.

Military contractor invoices.

Then one video.

Declan.

Recorded four years ago.

He looked weak.

But alive.

“My mother will understand this.”

Evelyn leaned forward.

Declan signed the private code.

Sadie translated.

The falcon flew north.

The second son followed the river.

The dead man wears another name.

Then he spoke aloud.

“Ronan, I’m sorry.”

Ronan stopped breathing.

“I could not come home.”

Then:

“Because the man who betrayed Night Falcon had already entered Raven Hill.”

Sadie looked around.

Staff.

Security.

June.

Wesley.

Frankie—

No.

Different family.

She corrected her thoughts.

Then Declan named him.

“Thomas Vale.”

Ronan’s current chief of security.

May you like

The bodyguard who had stood outside his study while Sadie was questioned.

And the man who had access to Poppy’s school information from the first morning she entered Raven Hill.
