Chapter 11 - DECLAN CAME HOME WITHOUT ENTERING RAVEN HILL

Declan had landed in Boston.

Then disappeared.

No hotel under his name.

No rental car.

Nothing.

But the passport photograph changed Evelyn.

She touched it for a long time.

Then signed:

My boy came home.

Ronan had to leave the room.

Sadie found him in the West Wing.

Standing at a window.

For the first time, he looked less like a mafia boss than a brother who had wasted four years grieving the wrong thing.

“He didn’t call me.”

Sadie said nothing.

Ronan laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps surviving and deciding I’m the dangerous part.”

“Maybe you were.”

He looked at her.

She did not soften it.

“Four years ago.”

A pause.

“Would Declan have trusted you to listen before acting?”

Ronan stared through the glass.

“No.”

That answer mattered.

Then Sadie said:

“Maybe he came back because that changed.”

Had it?

They found out through a post office box.

Declan had mailed one package the day after arriving.

Recipient:

Evelyn Cain.

Thomas Vale intercepted it at Raven Hill.

Investigators recovered it from his safe.

Inside:

A small wooden falcon.

A flash card.

One message:

MOTHER—

I AM CLOSE.

DO NOT LET RONAN SEARCH UNTIL VALE IS GONE.

Vale was gone.

Then:

ASK SADIE ABOUT AARON.

Sadie froze.

“What about Aaron?”

The next card:

HE KNOWS WHERE I AM.

Aaron.

Her husband.

The man in federal protection.

Ronan’s attorney arranged contact through investigators.

It took two days.

Then Sadie received a secure call.

She almost refused to answer.

Poppy sat with June in another room.

Sadie closed the study door.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then:

“Sadie.”

Her knees weakened.

Aaron’s voice.

Older.

But his.

“You’re alive.”

“Yes.”

Seven years compressed into one word.

“Why?”

Not:

How?

Why.

Aaron began explaining protection.

Threats.

Cases.

She stopped him.

“Did anyone physically prevent you from contacting me for seven years?”

Silence.

“No.”

“Then stop.”

He cried.

She almost did too.

“I was afraid.”

“That does not make the decision mine.”

“No.”

Good.

Then:

“Does Poppy know?”

“She knows you might be alive.”

He broke.

“I saw pictures.”

Sadie closed her eyes.

Of course he had.

Protection did not mean ignorance.

He watched his daughter grow from a distance.

That hurt almost worse.

Then Aaron said:

“Declan is with me.”

Sadie stopped breathing.

“Where?”

“I can’t say on this line.”

“Is he safe?”

“For now.”

“Why did he return?”

“To testify.”

Against Graham Marsh.

Thomas Vale.

The Night Falcon network.

Then Aaron added:

“But Declan found one more thing.”

“What?”

“Your mother Lena did not die from a random stroke.”

Sadie’s body went cold.

“No.”

Aaron corrected quickly.

“Not murder.”

Sadie exhaled.

“Then what?”

“She had been receiving threatening letters for years.”

Stress.

Fear.

Isolation.

Her death medically remained a stroke.

But she had been silenced by intimidation long before.

The letters came from someone inside the Cain Foundation.

Signature:

J.C.

June Callaway?

No.

June looked horrified when told.

Then Ronan realized.

J.C.

Jonas Cain.

His uncle.

Sterling’s younger brother.

Officially retired.

May you like

Living in Florida.

And until that moment, nobody had connected him to Night Falcon at all.
