Chapter 9 - THE LAST STERLING

The emergency lights flickered on.
Julian stood at the end of the corridor.
He wasn't alone.
Victor Sterling stood beside him.
I had thought Victor was dead.
Apparently, I had been wrong.
Damon stepped in front of me.
“You should have stayed buried.”
Victor smiled.
“People like me don't get buried.”
He looked at Lily.
“My granddaughter.”
I felt sick.
“You will never touch her.”
“She belongs to the family.”
“She belongs to me.”
“No.”
Victor's smile disappeared.
“She belongs to the bloodline.”
Damon raised his weapon.
Victor laughed.
“You won't shoot me.”
“Try me.”
Julian stepped forward.
“Damon, this doesn't concern you.”
Damon looked at him.
“Everything concerning Clara concerns me.”
My heart skipped.
Victor noticed.
“So that's how this ends.”
“What?”
“You've fallen in love with her.”
Damon said nothing.
Victor smiled.
“How predictable.”
Then he revealed something that made my blood freeze.
He held a remote control.
“Every financial account connected to your inheritance has been transferred.”
I stared.
“What?”
“The trust has been compromised.”
Damon immediately pulled out his phone.
“That's impossible.”
Victor smiled.
“Your mother signed the authorization.”
I turned toward my mother.
She looked horrified.
“I didn't.”
Victor laughed.
“She didn't know what she signed.”
My mother covered her mouth.
Victor continued.
“The money is already gone.”
I looked at Damon.
“What do we do?”
He remained calm.
“We expose them.”
Victor shook his head.
“You still don't understand.”
He pressed the remote.
Every screen in the hallway lit up.
A video began playing.
It showed my father.
Alive.
He was sitting at a desk.
I covered my mouth.
“Dad…”
His voice echoed through the corridor.
“If you're watching this, Clara, then I failed to protect you.”
Tears streamed down my face.
“But I left you something more valuable than money.”
The video changed.
My father looked directly into the camera.
“Truth.”
He explained that the trust had never been connected to a bank.
The money was hidden through dozens of legitimate charitable foundations.
The Sterling family had never controlled it.
And Lily was the only person who could legally activate the final transfer.
Victor's face turned white.
“No.”
My father continued.
“The moment my daughter reaches adulthood, the full inheritance becomes hers.”
Then he smiled.
“But she doesn't need to wait.”
A lawyer appeared on screen.
“If Clara Voss declares herself trustee of her daughter's inheritance, all assets become immediately protected.”
Damon looked at me.
“You can do it.”
I nodded.
I stepped forward.
“I declare myself trustee.”
The lights flickered.
Victor screamed.
“No!”
Every phone in the hallway began ringing.
Damon checked his.
“The accounts are back.”
Victor stumbled backward.
His empire had collapsed.
But Julian pulled a gun.
He aimed it at me.
Damon moved.
The gunshot exploded.
Damon fell.
“DAMON!”
I screamed.
He hit the floor.
Julian stared at the blood on his hands.
Victor turned and ran.
Security tackled him.
Julian dropped the gun.
I knelt beside Damon.
“Stay with me.”
He opened his eyes.
“I'm okay.”
“You're bleeding.”
“It's a graze.”
I started crying.
“You scared me.”
He smiled weakly.
“Good.”
“Good?”
“Means you care.”
I hit his shoulder.
“Don't joke.”
He caught my hand.
“Clara.”
“Yes?”
“I love you.”
My tears fell harder.
“I love you too.”
Behind us, police stormed into the corridor.
Victor was arrested.
Julian was arrested.
And the Sterling empire finally collapsed.
But I knew one thing.
May you like
Winning didn't mean forgetting.
It meant choosing what came next.
