Chapter 7 - THE CUSTODY TRAP

The courthouse was surrounded by reporters.
Cameras flashed before I even stepped out of the SUV.
“Clara! Is it true Damon Thorne is controlling your decisions?”
“Did Julian Sterling accuse you of being an unfit mother?”
“Are you hiding millions of dollars?”
I kept walking.
Damon's security team formed a wall around me.
Inside the courthouse, Julian was waiting.
He looked different.
The arrogant man who had abandoned me in the rain was gone.
In his place stood someone desperate.
His attorney approached.
“Mrs. Sterling, my client would like to resolve this privately.”
I looked at Julian.
“You should have thought about privacy before leaving me outside in a storm.”
His face hardened.
“I made a mistake.”
“You made a choice.”
He lowered his voice.
“You don't understand what you're dealing with.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“No, Clara.”
He stepped closer.
“If you don't cooperate, they will take Lily.”
My heart stopped.
“Who?”
Julian looked toward Damon.
“Him.”
Damon smiled coldly.
“Careful.”
Julian immediately stepped back.
The judge entered.
The hearing began.
Julian's lawyer presented photographs.
Me crying.
Me in the hospital.
Me with Damon.
They argued that I had placed Lily in danger by associating with a criminal syndicate leader.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I remained silent.
Then Julian's lawyer submitted one final document.
A medical report.
It claimed I had suffered severe emotional instability after childbirth.
I looked at Julian.
“You forged this.”
He didn't answer.
The judge ordered a temporary psychological evaluation.
Then something unexpected happened.
The courtroom doors opened.
My mother walked in.
Everyone turned.
She approached the witness stand.
“I need to testify.”
I stared at her.
“Mom?”
She looked at me.
“I lied.”
The courtroom became silent.
She turned toward the judge.
“My daughter is not unstable.”
Her voice trembled.
“She has been manipulated by my family for years.”
Julian's lawyer stood.
“Your Honor—”
“I have evidence.”
My mother handed the judge a folder.
Inside were bank records.
Emails.
Phone calls.
Photographs.
Everything.
The lawyer went pale.
My mother continued.
“The custody petition was created to force my daughter to surrender control of her inheritance.”
Julian jumped to his feet.
“You're lying!”
My mother looked at him.
“I lied for twenty-two years.”
Then she looked at me.
“But not anymore.”
I couldn't breathe.
She had finally chosen me.
Even if it was too late to save my father.
The judge ordered an emergency investigation.
Julian was taken into custody for fraud.
But as security escorted him away, he looked at me.
“You think you've won?”
I said nothing.
He smiled.
“You don't know who is coming.”
That evening, Damon and I returned to the estate.
He stood by the window.
“You're quiet.”
“I don't know how to feel.”
“About your mother?”
“Yes.”
“You don't have to forgive her.”
“I know.”
“But?”
I looked at him.
“She saved Lily today.”
Damon nodded.
“Sometimes people do the right thing too late.”
I walked closer.
“Damon?”
“Yes?”
“Why have you really been protecting me?”
He looked away.
“I told you.”
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“That's not the whole reason.”
Silence.
I stepped closer.
“Look at me.”
He did.
His eyes were no longer cold.
They were afraid.
“I loved your father,” he said.
“I know.”
“But that's not why I stayed.”
My heartbeat quickened.
“Then why?”
He whispered:
“Because I fell in love with you long before you ever knew my name.”
I froze.
“You…”
“I never intended to tell you.”
“Why?”
“Because you were married.”
“Damon.”
“And because I knew your life was already full of lies.”
He took one step closer.
“I refused to become another one.”
My eyes filled with tears.
Then Lily cried from the nursery.
We both turned.
Damon smiled.
“Your daughter has excellent timing.”
I laughed through my tears.
But before I could walk away, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice whispered:
“Your father left the ledger inside the hospital.”
My heart stopped.
“How do you know?”
The voice laughed.
“Because I put it there.”
The call ended.
I looked at Damon.
May you like
He immediately understood.
“The hospital.”
